LED replacements for 6V headlights

Postby Scrivet » Sat Nov 23, 2013 9:46 pm

I was thinking about changing to LED's for the headlights, the teardrop ones with 1133 bulbs. I found these and wondered if they'll work? The price is for two and they're only $10.39 shipping from Germany :D There's only six available so I hope you guys don't buy them out before I get mine

I think this quote from the listing might explain it.

Price is right. Twice what I originally paid for my Cub.

I took the head lights off my Cub and stored them on the bench. Didn't bother rewiring/changing bulbs when I went to 12 volt alternator. Never operated my Cub at night, when I needed lights.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Not only are they overpriced, but probably negative ground also. A company called SuperbrightLEDS.com sells them, and even has one that will work with + ground.

John, for what it might be worth...I bought LEDs from Superbright for my boat (12v. tiny "towers" to fit in existing incandescent light fixtures) some years back. The company had tech support which was helpful, the LEDs worked then ... and now (as running lights, etc., not as headlights because that was the objective...). So I'm saying that Superbright, in my experience, was an OK place.

OK, since your request was so convincing, I will not buy them out from under you.
Seriously, given the placement of the LEDs on that "bargain", the lamp reflector would need to be perfect for any kind of satisfactory operation.
Sealed beam lamps have the advantage of a protected reflector plus more precise placement of the lamp filament.

An interesting discussion of light reflectors. The original Cub lamps are very similar to flashlights.

They are continuously upgrading their product line. When I checked about 3 years ago they offered a bulb that would replace the original headlight bulb in 3 brightness ranges. Only the brightest would work on positive ground though. Looking at their website they have a lot more now, including some very powerful spotlights if you want them.

Maybe you didn't notice that's for a pair..........

I started this as half humorus half serious but I have actually learned a few things. I had thought about the reflectors and how much, if any, light would be reflected. Bus Drivers link makes it a thought out process instead of me "just wondering". Just one more thing to consider...... of course no more than I use the headlights they'll probably stay regular bulbs until they get to hard to find or to expensive to buy. At that time I hope there will be a very bright and inexpensive LED replacement available.

Not as modern as using an LED, nor as current efficient, but here is a how to for putting a 6 volt sealed beam in a tear drop headlight. viewtopic.php?f=140&t=70780

I love night farming! One headlight forward and the right one shining on the plow.

The rear light on my SA bounces all over the place. I need to replace the base part of the light, its stripped and I can't tighten it too keep it facing the same direction
