54 blade lifting mechanism problem
Hello, not new to the forum, but it is my first post. I've had great success finding answers to my many problems using the "search" function. You guys are awesome and I appreciate any help.
My problem: the bar that the lift arm pivots on is bent. I thought it was from years of use, so I had a new bar made, only to see it bend again after 1 season of pushing snow.
My idea: remove the current lifting mechanism. then, extend the frame rails back 27" (+/-) so they are directly below, and connected to, the hyd lifting arm. The hyds would push down, it would pivot where it is currently mounted, and the blade would raise off the ground (like a teeter-totter).
I am thinking of using square tubing that is smaller that the existing tubing so it can slide together (vs welding) so I can remove it and then mid-mount as a grader blade. I don't have any fabricating tools but there are people in my area who weld/fab on the side
My question: do I currently have it mounted correctly? Would my idea work or is there a better way forward? It's a 1950 Cub with hyd, no fast hitch.
Thanks!

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
I wouldn't get into modifying anything just yet. Changing one thing can lead to a possible worse problem elsewhere. Without seeing the entire blade mounting points it is hard for me to tell if it is mounted wrong somewhere else. Here is an excellent page from TM Tractor Parts showing the correct mounting of your style grader. http://www.tm-tractor.com/gim/blade54_001.htm

In looking again, the part in this blown up photo does not look right.

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
It would appear to me that there is too much space between the steering gear housing base and the blade lift arm, allowing your bar to bend. The "bar" should be a 5/8-11 X 12" bolt that keeps the arm snug against the base, precluding enough force to bend the bolt (bar). I think if you use the correct part, your problem will be solved.

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
Just a thought: I don't think you would be pleased with the lift height with your solution.
I agree with Don. That spacer should be just long enough so arm will pivot. Yours is not the first lift arm of that type I have seen bent. Straighten it, put another piece of angle iron on it and weld it to make a square tube. That will solve your problem. Or don't have a load on it when you lift blade

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
what I can see from the pictures is the you have a mixture of mounting hardware for a cub loboy. the real problem i see is the Item ( BAR ) with the clip in it is not correct. From the picture it looks to be 1/2 inch. it should be a 5/8 bolt about 14inches long threaded on one end. what the threaded bolt does is to hold the lifting arm against the square block to prevent the bolt from bending.Use a lock nut to kee snug. also the way you have it with the bar does not hold the lift arm snug. this will hinder lifting height. your drawing of possible future pivot point will only end up braking the hydraulic unit and engine ear or both.

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
I cant figure if you have it on cub lo-boy or regular cub!---if on regular cub none of your mounts are like mine---and you dont have the back of the push arms bolted to the reversed brawbar assembly!---thanks; sonny

Sonny, from the style of the hood and the height of the front axle I'd say it is a regular Cub.

Clark, the manual calls for a 12" long bolt. Being too long may be causing the problem as Don said.

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
That pivot pin should be a hardened bolt, either grade 5 or 8. A piece of rod such as you have or a standard bolt will bend. My front blade is also built from pieces, and I learned that the hard way.

Re: 54 blade lifting mechanism problem
It is simple to stop it from bending. You need a bracket welded to the bottom support . I will try to find a pic showing you what to do

I tried that on mine, but with a standard bolt it still bent.Boss Hog wrote:That will support the bolt and keep it from bending

Item #1 in the Parts Manual image is what you need to change the orientation of the plow frame for starters. This is what Barnyard was eluding to.
Also, as others have said, your hanger bolt is really loose.
