Spline Shaft Input Bearing

I picked up a new spline shaft bearing for the front of my transmission, forgetting I had already purchased one. When I compared them, the one from NAPA (6005-2RSJ) is a sealed one, and the one from IH (I think) (ST542) is open one side with a shield on the other.

First, I understand that the open side is toward the gears, right? But is there supposed to be a hole somewhere that lines up with the oil hole in the housing? I do not remember seeing one on the bearing that is still on the shaft, but I realized just now that I haven't really looked for it.

Next, which of these bearings would "you" recommend I use...the sealed or open bearing?

either will work quite well, but I would prefer the sealed one so that if the channel that directs oil to it becomes plugged it will not fail from lack of lubrication. If you decide to use the one that is open, the shield goes toward the gears. There is a hole that brings oil from the top of the channel around the front of the transmission down into the space between the bearing and the seal, so that is the side that needs to be open.

Sure glad you told me this! I actually had read an earlier thread in the How To section and I would have sworn it said the open side went toward the gears...or maybe I just misread it.

I'm glad that someone is working on a project, it's to darn cold up here in the great white north. I just have a real hard time getting motivated to go out and work on something when it's this cold out. It was 3 degrees this morning but its warmed up to 18 degrees now.

Yeah, well it was in the 70's yesterday, but down to the 40's now, and I am leaving the 26th to go up to Michigan! I am now asking myself...WHY!!! Do I really care so much for my sister up there to head to 6+" snow??!! You yankees are NUTS!!! You don't need snow to go play with your tractors. I expect to see a few plows pushing snow up in MI!

My oldest sister lives in Newaygo, which is about 30-40 miles north of Grand Rapids. She said they had 6" of snow there yesterday. UGH! I was born in Florida...I have NO business going to the frozen north!! It all looks pretty in photos, but having lived in NY and Cincinnatti, OH for a while, I hate wrapping up, then stripping down, then wrapping up again just to go shopping!

Last year I wore out the pto spline on my main shaft and bought another one with a bearing already on it. I washed the bearing still on the shaft to make sure there was no dirt in it, and we changed the shaft and bearing at the MidMo cubfest. About a month and a half later I split the tractor again to replace the bearing. It was a sealed on one side bearing and was on the shaft with the seal toward the front and the open side next to the gears. The oil coming down through the lubrication hole could not get to the bearing. Unfortunately that is the way I learn lots of things I tell people to check, it is because I did NOT check it.

We certainly do learn from our mistakes...but I would MUCH rather try to learn from someone else's!!!!!
