I know that everyone says to use "cheap" grease in the throw out bearing so it will melt and soak through the carbon, but what type of grease is that? In our area, grease in tubes is sold mostly for heavy equipment for road building and logging equipment. The cheapest grease in the parts store is Chevron NLGI2 EP (the dreaded red grease). The new grease for pins and bushings is a sticky gray grease with Moly. I have also used Power Punch synthetic NLGI2 for lubing heavy equipment. What brand and type is everyone using, and what results have you had? I just did my rear main seal and replaced my original 1949 TOB for a newer used one that has no broken edges, and I want to make sure I give it a long life. I have already soaked it in engine oil for a week.
Thanks
glenn

Re: Throw out bearing grease
I use the cheapest grease that Wal-Mart sells. It's black in color and has a low melting point. I don't know the brand off hand, and I'm out, so I need to re-supply

Re: Throw out bearing grease
This is about as good an explanation of grease classifications as I have seen. You want to try to find a multi-purpose grease with an LA classification, without a G classification.

Walmart's house brand, SuperTech.
If you ever get down to Redding, CA the Tractor Supply would have one, also.

Re: Throw out bearing grease
I use one of these little guns and the grease they sell for them. The gun is small enough to grease the throwout with a belly mower on, and the grease comes in packs of 3 tubes for about $3 or $4.

Re: Throw out bearing grease
If you have a tractor supply they buy their cheapest grease about $1.25 a tube, works great

Re: Throw out bearing grease
Thanks for all the replies. I think I understand now. I need a grease that is not rated for wheel bearings. I'll pick some up tomorrow.

Re: Throw out bearing grease
I have two grease guns, one for the cheap grease for the Cub TOB the other with a higher end grease for all the other lube requirements around the homestead.

Re: Throw out bearing grease
Same here, Ricky, I use the synthetic red grease for most applications, cheap TSC grease for TOB. Jim, thanks for that link, I've never seen it laid out in such laymans terms.
