"New" 1948 Cub

Mornin. I've been reading on this forum so I decided to register.

A few weeks ago my wife and I bought a 48 with a few attachments - plow, disc harrow, scraper / grading blade, and other various pieces of rusty iron.
Tractor is great. Starts right up and runs well. I'll describe some issues I have had so far. One day the tractor just quit so I started testing. Apparently the system was not charging (distributor not magneto). After investigating, I found some issues from the previous owner. First, the battery was installed backwards (6 volt) with negative ground instead of positive. I opened up the voltage regulator cover and found points slightly welded together so I separated and cleaned them. That was probably from the previous owner jumping with a 12V truck combined with backwards battery. While I was working on this, I took the generator off, opened it up and everything looked good. Brushes were fine. Lightly greased shaft where it goes into the bushing. Polarized generator. Anyway, after researching the wiring, the system is charging now and runs great again. I think with the points previously welded it drained the battery and I can't seem to get it charged enough to turn the starter motor. But that's ok for now, I just use my homemade hand crank. I also had to free up the governor linkage - it would not allow the throttle to move. I changed the engine and rear end oil. I need to change the oil in both final drive cases. My next project is to rebuild the hydraulic block. It works but oil is leaking through a bit. Thanks to info on this forum, I've been able to do all this much more easily.

Ground is still a bit too soggy from snow and rain to plow the garden, but a great tractor!

Welcome to the Forum. Sounds like you got your Cub headed in the right direction. Don't forget to oil the fan hub and use cheap grease on the throw out bearing.

On your touch control, could you be a little more specific about

You may not need to do a full rebuild. One common area to leak (and run down the side of the torque tube) is the o-ring on the control valve. Much quicker, easier, and cheaper to fix than a complete rebuild.

I'll have to take a look at the diagrams and locate how to investigate the o-ring on the control valve. Also do the recommended oiling on fan hub, etc. Thanks

There should be two boots, probably leather, on the front of the touch control. The smaller one is attached to the lever that operates the hydraulics. That is the contol valve. Clean every thing up real good and see where the hydraulic oil appears. If it's from there you can slide the valve out, put on a new o-ring and slide it back in. (OK, it's not quite that easy but you don't have to do a full rebuild to fix it.)

Welcome to the forum, great place to be to find out anything you need to know about Cubs. You've already discovered the manuals listed here, they are a great resource. That's an interesting grader blade setup you have. How's that work for you? It seems it would work really well!
