mysterious gear noise

Finally got out to push some snow today! It's been piling up while the cub was in the shop, so i had to take my time, but it was a great day for it. The new throwout bearing smoked a bit, but I think it was my fault for riding the clutch.. The battery quit charging at some point, so i tapped on the regulator and it came back to life.. I'm gonna triple check to make sure it has good ground, but i think this TSC regulator may be garbage.

Anyways, about half way through i started getting a nasty rattling noise in 1st and reverse. it's hard to describe.. kindof like a zipper? it would sometimes go away if i went back and forth between gears, but not always. my guess is maybe the shifter is worn and not putting it fully into gear? what do you guys think?

You might want to remove the shifter and see if both forks are tight on the shafts. Also look for cracks in the forks.

1st/reverse fork cracks underneath the bolt, make sure the fork bolts are tight

Also while the cover is off check the fluid, if it is milky drain and replace with fresh 90wt gear oil. good time to clean the holes at each end of the tranny that drain oil down to the input shaft bearings.
