Reusing clutch

This may be a dumb question,if you reuse your old clutch assembly do you have to adjust the fingers when reinstalling it back on the tractor?thanks

Yes , it is very important to adjust the fingers . Having them properly set will increase the life of the T/O bearing and prevent chatter. Also lubricate the the shaft end that goes into the pilot bearing and be sure to grease the T/O bearing with the cheapest grease you can find .

Much easier to do now with tractor apart than later with it together

Very slight wear in the clutch disk makes a big difference in the finger height,so it is best to do it while tractor is apart.

I'm not sure I understand,I figured the fingers would not need any adjustment,all I did was remove clutch assembly,rebuild motor and reinstall clutch back on motor,so the only part of the clutch that was touched were the bolts that hold it to the flywheel.I ask because the tractor is together,never thought it would need any adjustment.

You may not have needed to make any adjustments, but since you had the tractor split, then was the time to check.

If this is the first time you have adjusted a Cub pressure plate, with the Cub split and the pressure plate and clutch mounted, it should be less than ten minutes to adjust it. If you have adjusted a Cub pressure before it is less than a five minute job. Either way it will be WAY less time than trying to do it through the hand hole. Never the less, it will be time well spent.

Had you adjusted the fingers at some time before the teardown? If not, then even though you did not change anything regarding the clutch, they may not have been properly adjusted to begin with.

As I understand it, the tractor is back together, so you will have to make your adjustments through the hand hole, but it is not that bad unless you have something belly mounted.

Thanks everyone for all the info,I guess I will check them thru the tranny hole,I did not adjust anything prior to removal,guess better to be safe than tear something up.

Would you have to compensate for the wear that has been worn off the clutch plate? and if so how would you do that? I would think if it was adjusted proper when it was installed when new, it should be ok as is for remaining life of the plate

As the disk wears the pressure plate moves toward the flywheel and the fingers raise. Normally very minor change, but I always check one when it is apart just to be on the safe side. Most times they do not need adjusted.

stevey30, You should have checked your clutch adjustment while the tractor was split, I just split mine 3 times in the last too months for the RMS, and had to remove the pressure plate and clutch disc to remove the flywheel, anyways you should have set the fingers to 1 and 1/4" from the face of the pressure plate, using a combination square. a 1/2 wrench will loosen the nut so the Flat head set screw can be adjusted. I've read that some ppl adjust theirs through the clutch inspection hole using a piece of bent wire to check the clearance, but that's a lot of trouble and guessing, and feeling around in the dark, even if you can fit both hands in. more than likely you should split again, while you are in there check you throwout bearing and rear main seal, RMS is behind the flywheel, check for oil leaks. if you TOB has plenty of life in it, coat the graphite on it with cheap grease and use a heat gun to heat the grease so it will penetrate deep in to the graphite and repeat., Goodluck
