Carburator for 1952

Postby madtrapper » Tue Mar 25, 2014 1:35 pm

Hi, My idle adjusting screw on IH carb. 3/4 updraft doesn't seem to adjust anything. I turned all the way in it shuts down but when I back off 1 1/2 turns it starts to idle but not good. So doesn't matter what the turns does nothing different. The screw is almost all the way out and no difference. I just need some help on what to try next. Cleaned carb. twice seems very clean.
Blessings
David

I have the same problem with adjustment on the IH carb on my 1952 cub. Mine seems to want to flood slightly no matter where the idle screw is set and it has no effect on the fuel flow. At the LA Cubfest, someone commented that the number on the carb indicated that it had a larger jet, but I did not get the details. Maybe I should have paid more attention.

David, That "idle" screw is more for a smooth transition from low idle to high idle. Have you adjusted the screw on the throttle shaft? Since this tractor hasn't run in a while, I'd suggest getting a few "new" hours on it to loosen things up again. If the Cub needs a tuneup, valves adjusted, governor work, etc.... Did you get oil pressure showing on the gauge when it started up?

Yes, oil pressure gauge needle goes all the way over on the white side. I did replace all the electrical components, plugs, wires, points and condenser, cap, router ,voltage regulator, repaired generator. Don't know how to adjust valves, don't know how the governor works but all the linkage is free and moving. Was a tough job to get it started. Smokes a little also.
I did not adjust the throttle shaft.
Thanks for the tips

Service manual explains how to adjust the valve tappet clearance.

Did you time (ignition system) the engine? Conduct compression tests? 100% engine tune up?

Google governors, Wikipedia will have an explanation on how governors work.

Idle adjustment screw on the carburetor adjusts air flow and not fuel flow.
I have an excuse. CRS.
