Governor on Allis Chalmers B

Postby staninlowerAL » Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:56 am

The governor on my B does not seem to be responding when the engine experiences a increase in the load. The throttle does increase the engine RPM ok when advanced. Any suggestions/troubleshooting tips? Thanks. StaninlowerAL

To see if the governor is working, force the arm back in the photo above towards the carb with your hand. It'll open up the throttle and increase the RPM's. If the governor is free and working correctly, it'll fight you and force it back to its original location. If the governor is stuck, you won't be able to move the arm back. While you are right there, make sure the rod is not rubbing on the block. If it is, you may have to force (bend) the arm out towards you to have the rod clear the casting.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I have 2 AC B's and neither governor works very well!---I think its an internal problem with them,---just like 4 of my cubs, and I don't have time or resources to fix them! thanks; sonny

With all the governor linkage connected, I tried the test of manual advance the throttle rod with the engine at idle to see if there was any resistance. Very little, and I had to manually return the throttle to idle. I'm wondering if the spring attached to the throttle rod is the right length or tension. On my cubs there is a definate resistance if the throttle is opened in that manner. All the linkage moves freely with no binding or restriction so if it's not the spring then it must be inside the governor. Not looking forward to getting into that!! Stan

Looked at my I&T manual a short while ago. The B's governor is pretty simple - straight forward.

Don't know the problem. Suggest removing and disassembling to determine the problem.

Thanks. I have a D12 engine disassembled for rebuild now. The governor looks similar so maybe it won't be so bad, as soon as I can get at it. Too many projects and too little time!!

D-12 wont be the same!---I looked at 2 of my WD-45's and they too are different!---the B AND C tractors are the same because they are the same engine!---Do you have an oil pipe entering the top side of your gov. arm??? ---one of my B's does and one dont! (the one that dont is nice and tight!)
Not sure if the rad. has to come off to get the gov. to go forward far enough to come out or not!!---NOT a lot of room on the front side! thanks; sonny

There is an oil supply line, looks like 1/8 tubing connected on the top side. I guess I'll just have to get into it and see what happens.

That's the oil supply line to the gov. ant it comes from a "T" fitting behind the oil filter base!---It is a 1/8 th inch tube!
I think the linkage, both inner and outer is worn beyond limits and fly weight pins/holes could be worn really bad!---I need to fix one of mine too! thanks sonny
