Thanks for that information! That will help me a great deal. I've helped change out a final before on my Dad's old Cub, but it was at least ten years ago, so I don't remember much about it. And, the final had already been rebuilt so it was just a swap. That explains the whole process.

One thing that the other guys haven't mentioned is making sure that ALL of the slop is taken out of your Governor. When I say all the slop, I mean that with the engine off and the lever in low speed setting, when you start to move the throtte, there should be almost immediate motion from the throttle lever on the carb. With the control almost midway, you should not be able be able to move the rod from the governor crossing shaft to the Carb at all. A sloppy Governor will really sap the power from your cub. I did a partial rebuild on Merlin (my 1949) and he has a good deal of power even though he smokes. Lewis (my 1955) has zero slop in the governor, and he really shows it. The engine speed doesn't dip at all when I am in second, middle throttle and put a load on the tractor (turn uphill, etc.). Come spring, I am going to finish the balance of the rebuild on Merlin's governor as I really want to get the same engine stability in that tractor...

Are you sure it's not the tranny?? One that has had water in it has questionable bearings. The noise can be transmitted to the finals by way of the shaft.... but just a thought.

Drop the oil pans and see what you got.

Working on my 50 was how I developed the 'mushroom theory'.

Thanks for the advice on the governor. I will check it out also.

And, my noise could be the transmission. It roars when pulling hard going up hill. Downhill it is quiet. It almost sounds like a roaring rattle.

I'm going to change out all the fluids soon. I've already changed the oil and filter. The transmission and finals are getting new fluid too here soon. I've never changed the antifreeze because it checked out good, but I'm going to change it anyway. That way they will have all been renewed.

I've got a problem with my right hand final drive. Someone stripped out the forward implement holes that the drawbar attaches to in order to attach the plow. So, someone welded bolts into those two holes, which in itself might not have been so bad, but they used a 5/8 fine thread bolt that I can't find nuts to fit!

How hard is it to find a final drive to either swap it out with, or maybe I could take a carcass and take mine's innerds out and swap them?

Do an Ebay search on 5/8-18 nuts several hundred possibilities. I see a couple of them say the rear wheel nuts for a Ford 9N, 2N, 8N are 5/8-18. Know any body with one you could point out that they are missing a couple lug nuts :lol: ?

Post a wanted ad in the VINE somebody may have one for sale.

It's been a little while since I posted, but I wanted to say a great big ol' THANK YOU to all you folks! Once again, you've helped me get the ol' cub back in good order!!!

Friday evening it plowed up all the gardens, and thanks to the freshly adjusted valves, it has a great deal more power than it used to! I didn't know it could have so much power.

Since the fuel issue was resolved on this thing, the Cub has been doing great. I have changed all the fluids in it, and plowed up and disked three gardens. This is the first year I have really put this cub to farming use, and I know that it is capable of doing a lot more than what I'm usng it for. Now that I'm just starting to get in to farming, I'm trying to learn what all I can use it for.

Great to hear!

You can do a whole lot with a Cub..... Pretty much only limited by the implements you have or can borrow AND the size of the project. A big hayfield can make a Cub look pretty puny, especially after mowing a bit.

It has been a while since I posted anything about the '50 Cub, but yesterday was an extremely productive day. And, I owe it to you folks who have been so helpful! I've included a couple of photos from a thread I did a couple of years ago entitled "unwelcomed carburetor modification". Someone had broken off the main jet in the body of the carb, and drilled and tapped in a set screw to plug the outer portion of the jet port, and they had left the broken off part in the carburetor. I had been unwilling to tackle the job of trying to extract the remains of the original jet, but yesterday I bit the bullet and and tried to get it out.

Well, it didn't go as planned, but I am happy to say it now has a new jet. The old one refused to be extracted, and my extractors were removing layers of it. I ended up step drilling the remains of the original jet to get it out. Then, I re-tapped the threads and installed the new jet. My main concern was if the jet would seal. And, it did! Thanks again to everyone for your advice and encouragement. It only took me two years to work up the nerve to try!

Honestly though, it had gotten to where it ran so rough, and so rich, that I had no choice really. Now that the fuel issue is fixed, I need to figure out why it is missing and has no power at high speeds. I'm suspecting that it is an ignition problem. But, at least it isn't belching out black smoke that burns my eyes anymore! And, it purrs like a kitten at idle, and no more smoke! :D
