1948 Farmall Cub, I Need A Little Help!

Postby Sean Keys » Tue Apr 22, 2014 7:49 pm

I am in need of a little bit of help. I first saw this cub at a local garage about 5 years ago (I was 10 years old then), the man had bought it and was sorting through its problems after sitting outside for 12 years. I expressed my young enthusiasm and left that day in high spirits about it. Fast forward to now, now 15 years old. I received word from the grandson of the owner (my age) of there plan to scrap the tractor. I immediately called the man and went to look at it that very night. What I saw was not the tractor I remembered though..... it was pretty rough. Two flat tires and rust and chipping paint galore. The old tractor sitting back in the scrap heap was not all though, there was a push blade, Cub 169 2-way plow (complete), and a belly mounted sickle bar mower. And on top of all of that, FREE DELIVERY!! I was determined to save it so I threw out an offer without hesitation..... slightly less than scrap. HE ACCEPTED! I got it home on Easter Sunday and immediately went to work. It had not run in two years and looked like it should run. I took the head off and freed up a couple of stuck valves, cleaned points and carb, and seven hours later it was running like a, bad running farmall cub. It has a zenith carb that looks non original. When it gets a load on it the tone of the engine deepens (not like a normal farmall engine, this is even deeper and groggier, it also spits and sputters) no matter what I do to the mixture screw I can not resolve this issue. Any idea's out there? Has it just had too much over the almost 65 years of service? Also, anybody have any idea's on cleaning the gas tank? We used CLR and Lime chips on our 1951 M and that worked, but it did not have a hood attached to it!

Since engine runs, conduct a complete tune up.

Congratulations on the tractor.

Sounds like you got a great deal there. Welcome to the group. I hope to see more posts from you as your project progresses.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Take the gas tank/hood off. Drain it. Put a couple of gallons of water and some TSP cleaner. Add some granite rocks. Rock and Roll the rocks around until they clean up everything inside.

Run some "seafoam" in your gas and see if that clears up some of the bad running.

Seafoam and a little Marvel Mystery Oil worked wonders on mine after I got it home. I would definitely try that first. Works quicker than you'd think, also. Could save you a lot of time, money and headache and only costs about $6 per tank full of gas if you treat it heavily, which I do often.

Welcome to the forum from Arkansas. Evapo-0Rust works good on rust. You need about 2 gallon but it is reusable and cleans with water then be sure to dry the tank out good. Also shine a light in the tank and look at the bottom if it is very rusty. Removing the rust may open up some pin holes.
Sounds like you need a good carb cleaning, take apart, being sure to lift the carb top straight up so you don't break the the idle tube, get everything clean, and get the float properly adjusted. Adjust the governor linkage from the carb after you install the carb, and adjust timing by ear after you get it started.
Good luck and have fun with your Bargain of a cub.

Welcome to the forum! Good advice has already been given. Try that first and see what happens. Would also suggest downloading some of the manuals and going by what they say; very informative.

If you can, post some pics. Congrats on your (first?) Cub! :coffee:

Yes, first cub. We have 3 farmall a's, 2 super c's, and an m as well. That is it for the farmalls. Hopefully and international td-9 bulldozer on the way as well!

Also, a big thanks to Ed for referring me the this forum, if it wasn't for him I would still be scratching my head!

There is a wealth of information here. I find myself going back page after page in the old threads picking of tidbits of information. It's a gold mine.
