Besides, if it really hasn't run for over a year, I would want to change the oil, prime the oil pump, clean the carb, install new spark plugs and do a whole tune-up prior to actually running the engine. Doing anything else will just further contaminate the engine and potentially cause more problems!
Even if there's a rod knocking, that tractor would be worth the money to rebuild the engine!

Havoc, my notion is that it comes down to what you want the tractor for. If you just need a Cub for various tasks, you might want to hold off and find something that runs. If you want a collector tractor, this one would certainly fit the bill because it's a '79. If you want a collector, IMO you should be willing to maybe pay a little more because of what it is.
Of course, since it's yellow/white and not red, the seller should drop his price $1000 just on principle!!

I wouldn't spend the money on a carb kit just yet, I'm a big fan of diassembling and a good cleaning first. Also have you lubed up and correctly adjusted the governor linkage. It's been setting awhile and things may have gotten sticky and who knows if the linkage is correct. Then it's time for new plugs, wires, cap and all the fixins so you know what you have there, and then the valve adjustment and all the fluids and all the other things to do to a new addition. Somewhere doing all this will get rid of your problems I'll bet.
