I'd even do this acting dumb, not with the open intent to see if the engine is stuck. If that crank shaft turns, and the engine's not locked up, I'd stop, make the deal, and get it on the trailer! If you get it running while there, it's a whole different ballgame, and all negotiations will completely change. If you get it running there, expect to pay the price he's asking. If you don't, you might save $1000.

Besides, if it really hasn't run for over a year, I would want to change the oil, prime the oil pump, clean the carb, install new spark plugs and do a whole tune-up prior to actually running the engine. Doing anything else will just further contaminate the engine and potentially cause more problems!

Even if there's a rod knocking, that tractor would be worth the money to rebuild the engine!

I agree.

Havoc, my notion is that it comes down to what you want the tractor for. If you just need a Cub for various tasks, you might want to hold off and find something that runs. If you want a collector tractor, this one would certainly fit the bill because it's a '79. If you want a collector, IMO you should be willing to maybe pay a little more because of what it is.

Of course, since it's yellow/white and not red, the seller should drop his price $1000 just on principle!! 8)

WELL, THAT'S A PRETTY TRACTOR.

And it is a moral dilemma. Highly, mostly, probably, for sure! likely that I don't know the in's and out's of tractor-dealing, but it seems to innocent me that If you'd like a straight up deal, set the prices for conditions A, B, C, D, etc.that others have discussed , and then as others have yet again said you'd both sign on the dotted line, and THEN go at it--try to start it, see if it the engine is stuck, see if a separate gas tank will work, and of course you must leave yourself the option to walk away if you're not happy. You'll have lost time, helped the guy out, but more importantly worked it out so that both are reasonably satisfied. You should both be able to shake hands on it after all is said and done? And, as someone said, a used tractor is a used tractor: there will be repairs, unexpected problems that hopefully were not hidden on purpose but are just part of an old, nice looking tractor.

SURE DO LIKE THAT TRACTOR!

I've held my opinion for some time, and now it just busted out!

Hope to hear how it worked out.

So here's what happened...When I arrived to look at the Cub the owner and son was attempting to start it. It would start but not stay running. His asking price was out the window and a lot of questions were answered by what was going on. I thought this sounded like the main meter being blocked so I started the talk. I left him $2600 and the tractor came home with me. It was running a little rough with a hesitation when I left but overall I figure a carb kit and the predictable oil hose and belts.
When I got it home I put a can of sea foam in it and played with it for about 45 minutes. It definitely has improved greatly but I still want to see inside the carb.
When I was loading the cub he mentioned he had other cub parts he wanted to sell. I left with a new battery and tool box, $100 for both, for my other Cub.
Overall good day! Thanks again for all the feedback and information.

Congratulations! :{_}: I wouldn't spend the money on a carb kit just yet, I'm a big fan of diassembling and a good cleaning first. Also have you lubed up and correctly adjusted the governor linkage. It's been setting awhile and things may have gotten sticky and who knows if the linkage is correct. Then it's time for new plugs, wires, cap and all the fixins so you know what you have there, and then the valve adjustment and all the fluids and all the other things to do to a new addition. Somewhere doing all this will get rid of your problems I'll bet.

Agree with scrivet on the carb kit. My Super A was doing something similar, starting and only running for a short time. All it took to fix was scraping the jet and getting other gunk out and running freshgas with seafoam in it.

Also like Scrivet mentioned, before you do anything, cover the bases. New wires, plugs, lubing and adjusting of various linkages.

Very Nice!!! Congratulations!!!! I'd say you did real good. Like Scrivet said, I'd tear into it and start cleaning things up, tune-up, etc. Pull the spark plugs and spray Sea Foam in the holes, then start going to work and just let that stuff sit in there and dissolve whatever it can.

Good deal. Most anybody can own a Cub. Not everybody can own a '79 Cub....

Re: 1979 Cub - value

Postby Tim66 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 6:12 pm

Give me a couple weeks and I'll try to get some pics up. I'm back to the 12 hour shift, doesn't leave a lot of time for everything else.
After more fuel starvation I found a lot of debris in the tank and fuel line. I flushed them out, flossed the line and took the carb apart to see what the condition was. The needle valve may have been sticking also. It didn't come out when I took the float off. I used compressed air and carb cleaner to do an internal clean up while I had it apart. I was able to reuse the gasket for the two carb halves in the hopes of getting to ops check the repairs/flush. When I went to install carb I realized there was nothing to salvage the carb-intake gasket.
So...since I'm doing the long shifts, I'm waiting for 5 May for TM to get back from vacation.
I did wash it off and recorded the tractor s/n 253347 and the engine date 10-11-B. The "B" indicates a 1978 but I'm told it's typical to have a year off on the motor. True?

Again, thanks for all your input and wisdom. I hope to get this going soon as I can!

A motor built toward the end of the year can sometimes wind up in the following years tractor. So yes, that cast code could easily be in a "79 tractor. A lot of 1950 demo Cubs have "S" code engines in them.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

good deal tim66 , I have a '78 3/4 , a sweet tractor, the original owner kept her for a year or two , I bought her from the second owner , who only cut grass 'till I bought her . I paid $1200 for her , she needed a clutch , but , location , location , location . I'd pay $2600 for her in a heartbeat . coppersmythe.................................
