Need help with Cub numbers
New member with a question. I am restoring a Cub with no serial number plate. Engine casting is 10 26 W, which I think can be a 51 or 73. Engine serial number is 1MCUBM 23209. What year do I have?? Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help with Cub numbers
Double check the engine serial number to see it contains one more number.

Above, listing of tractor serial numbers, and casting date codes.
There was several sheet metal, style changes, over the years. Style changes may get you closer to manufacturer year. However, this is not a guaranteed method of identifying the manufacture date.
Photo of the tractor may help with the identification.

Re: Need help with Cub numbers
I agree with Eugene, that serial number is an early 1948 so I doubt it would be correct with a "W" cast code. There is a number missing somewhere. Is the Tractor a square hood or rounded hood?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

There are more cosmetic and physical differences than just color.launchba wrote:May have to go by colors???

Your engine serial number doesn't match up with the date code. Why, I don't know.
Photos will help get closer to the year manufactured - providing parts have not been replaced.

No missing numbers. Your engine is not original to the tractor, it was originally installed in a combine or bailer. These engines did not use the same SN sequence as that of the tractors, so that is why your 1951 cast code engine has a shorter SN than one originally installed on a 1951 tractor. The PN on the engine should be 251341R6. By 1973, IH was well into R8 revisions on blocks.
