Remove/replace Cub valve guides

Postby fl37 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 12:50 pm

I'm ready for this step in the restoration of my 1948 Cub. I'm following the procedures in the GSS-1411 service manual.
On p. 1-21 the instructions are to "press the guides from the crankcase". It looks like the term "crankcase" is the same as "engine block" in this manual. So which direction to remove the guides---from the top of the block downward in the direction of the crankshaft or the opposite direction?

The instruction for installing the guides is "install new guides from the top of the crankcase and press them into the crankcase bores to a measured distance of 1-3/32 inch from the top surface of the block to the top center of the guide". This seems pretty clear.

Thanks for your help.

Basically, you want to pull the valve guides towards the top of the block and not towards the cam shaft.
I have an excuse. CRS.

If you are down to a bare block, I'm pretty sure you can drive them down/out through the bottom.

Recent post about this subject. As both previous posters are correct, it depends on if you are working in frame or a bare engine.

The engine has been completely dissembled to fix a broken lower right flange on the front of the block. That's done. So I'll drive the valve guides out downwards towards where the camshaft will be installed.
Thanks for your help.
