upgrading into the 70's with a 184

Postby Kirk-NJ » Thu Jun 12, 2014 4:56 am

For many years I have mowed with my '68 offset loboy cub. I had a chance to buy a 184 from a friend so I jumped on it. He tells me that it runs fine for about 30 minutes or so and than dies. He can start it back up in an hour or so. I haven't had a chance to go thru the manual yet but it's has what looks the have a 12V delco alt on it. It also has a resister. My first thought was maybe coil? Any thoughts on this? It also has a 3pt on it. I have other tractors with 3pt's on them and this seem kind of light duty to me. What are you guys using your 3pt's for? any photos? Here's a couple of photos of the new rig.

I should also add that when looking thru some of the paper work this morning I found some paper work for a pertronix ignitor Which i believe he told me he had install. I don't know if this would have added to the problem or not? Any clue as I am not familiar with this system?

Look at your distributor, if it has a single wire, connected to the normal threaded stud, it does not have a Pertronix. If it has two wires, passing through a rubber grommet, it has a Pertronix in it. I've had very good success with the Pertronix kit but I've seen a few cases where they were not connected properly. The red wire, going into the distributor must receive the full battery voltage, to work properly. If it's connected to the load side of the resistor, it will not work well. Of course, you may simply have a failing coil. If the Pertronix paperwork, you received, includes installation instructions, read them carefully to understand to understand the system better.

Although the stock coil works fine with the pertronix, the pertronix instructions do suggest a different coil.
I would replace the coil.

LFEngineering. Check out LFEngineering, a poster on this portion of the site for his projects.

I have tractors with 3-point and machines that can do the task(s) I want performed. I have yet to see the need for utilizing the 154's 3-point for any thing other than as draw bar for towing a 2 wheeled trailer.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I use my 3-pt with a 6 foot wide box blade, a 4 foot wide landscape rake, and a 6 foot long boom to lift items. The boom will not lift a lot of weight, about 300 lbs. maximum if attached at the end of the boom. I find the 3-pt useful for light duty, but I have larger tractors to do the heavy work.

I tighten the coil post nut which was loose, checked the fluid and started to mow. After about 45 minutes it dies and would not restart. Red light blinking. Checked spark at plug. None. coil hot to touch. The hood was hot above the muffler but gas didn't seen to be boiling.
here is the wire set up at coil/dizzy. Two wires from harness to plus side of coil. From dizzy (2 wires) red to plus side of coil black to minus side of coil. No marking that I can see on the coil. Any suggestions?

Yep, coil's shot, getting hot and loosing spark.

You'll be surprised what that 3-point can do. It will easily lift and haul enough to lift the front of the tractor off the ground.

Nice Find!

Thanks guys. I will replace the coil. I kind of figured that was it but I never deal with the pertronix ign before.
What do you guys think the 3pt is worth if I took it off and put it up for sale. I'm sure the 3pt was a great option if you just owned the one tractor but I have so many other tractor with 3pt that I don't think I'll ever use it except maybe to drag my log splitter around.

I don't know the value of your 3 pt., but when my brother was looking for one, they were pricey and hard to find. Should fetch a good price!

Since you're replacing the coil, you might as well get the recommended Pertronix coil. According to the instruction sheet, the Pertronix requires a minimum coil resistance value of 3 ohms. I think a coil of lower ohm value will likely cause the problem you are having. Whatever coil you use, measure the resistance across the coil terminals, to make sure it's compatible.

HamiltonBob, one of the advertisers on this board, lists individual 3-point parts. This will perhaps provide an estimate of it's value.

Opinion. I wouldn't remove the 3-point. Tractor is worth considerably more with the 3-point, if you ever decide to sell.

Tried out the 3pt yesterday. Moved the log splitter and then put the 6' IH stone rake on and did the gravel driveway. It worked well for a light weight machine and even on the turns with the rake up it the air the front tires stayed on the ground. These little cub always seem to impress me. Now I know why they are so well like by so many people.
