I bought a Cub down in KY last weekend and I learned (I think) how to post pics tonight and thought I'd show everyone. I guess this is one Cub Rowlf didn't get. And it was in Cold Spring, Rowlf's backyard! :shock: Although I was told it wasn't, the motor was stuck. This past week I removed the head and alternated PB Blaster, Kroil, and Marvel Mystery Oil. It slowly started moving and now it turns freely. I've read that some have towed tractors to free the motors, etc. But I don't if that is a good idea. Upon removing the head I found something like crud, probably signs of water, in one of the cylinders. I think it might have damaged the cylinder if forced to turn without removing the crud. Anyway, I cleaned the cylinders with steel wool and buttoned it back up to check compression. Compression was 55, 0, 75, 75. After adding oil to #2 it was still 0. I re-removed the head and dummy me didn't see the that the exhaust valve on #2 was open all the time. So I removed the valve and polished the crud on the stem, etal. And I put it all back together. I was then called to supper! I can be called just about anything, as long as you call me to supper! Everything will have to wait until tommorrow night.:roll: My concerns are, will the rings free up and give me a higher PSI? and did I really unstick the valve, or just postponing the inevitable? And Rowlf, I'm really sorry. I should have called you and let you have first refusal. :twisted: I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter. Larry

Looks nice 8) , and glad that you got it all under control :D . Funny how much enjoyment we can get out of playing with our toys.

I see it has the brackets for a front blade. did you get the blade too?

yup, you have probably unstuck the valves. may need to lapt them, but once it runs a little and you do another compression check you will know more.

Thanks for the input. I still don’t have it running. I had to rewire most of the dash and the distributor had been moved. A lot of small problems. But I do have a spark. I did get the scraper blade and a Woods ( I think) 59” mower. The mower doesn’t have any guide wheels and it looks as though it wasn’t made for any. While I was there, I haggled a deal on a 42" Woods mower. Larry

Hey Larry...NICE 184 International! :wink: Once you git her runnin' try addin' some SEAFOAM (available at NAPA) to the gas & the oil. It'll help remove the old carbon buildup on your valves and clean your carburetor jets and innerds too! :wink: If you've got the head removed try squirtin' some KROIL into the cylinders and pistons. It'll help free up any stuck rings and clean up the cylinder walls. :wink:

The single belt would tend to indicate a Wodds 59, but I've never seen one that looks quite like that one with the large round fornt. Are all 3 blades the same size. housing looks like the center one may be larger.

John, I looked through the parts I received and found a Woods guard with a 59 loboy model no. I also noticed drilled holes on the deck where guide wheel brackets may have been installed. Each blade measure 20".

Thanks Rudi, I appreciate your input. I paid $500.00 for the tractor and implements. And $135.00 for the 42" mower. I met the PO at an auction where they were auctioning off 2 Cubs. I was standing there critiquing(sp?) the Cubs. When he approached me he said he had a 184 Loboy at home that he wanted "5" for. I thought he meant $5,000.00, and said I would think about it. :roll: After talking with him, I realized it was $500, not $5,000. I remember seeing one on the forum not too long ago, and thought, "Man, I'd love to own one of those!" So I told him on the spot that I would take it. It didn't have a grille housing, but I bought one on Epay for $160.00 including shipping. Ouch! I guess that I just like to spread it around. Larry

How is the compression on #2 now that you've cleaned up the exhaust valve and removed all the crud?

400 lb'er, If I remember right, it was about 60 psi. I still haven't started it yet. I attempted it a few times by spraying starting fluid in the carb, but no luck. I'll work on it tommorrow if I have time. Larry

Oh boy....sounds like you're in the "good enough" zone. With any luck, that engine will just keep getting better once you start running it, and you can put off a total rebuild until you get around to it.
