Correct police
Just painted the grill and engine covers for my 1957 350 utility. Question.......The white,I'm using is the cross reference # 901...PP&G 8665?. Just painted it today it's drying. It looks like the cream like IH935. Why does it look like, in all the pictures and booklets like whitecap white? For that matter the faded white that I took off. Was it that original cream color? Is the correct police coming to my house. I am really #$%@! off. I do not like those guys telling me "Hey that's not right"Ahh wait a minute I think I'm saved. The heat shield that was between the engine and gas tank looked like cream color?Did the sun bleach the orig. white?Help me please I think I just heard someone knocking....................

Do Not Despair!
I went thru the same thing when I was looking for the white trim for my 1958 340U. The IH 901 is correct. Here is a response I got from a guy on RedPower.com
I used OMNI urethane 8665. I do recall being a little shocked when I first put it on as to how much green is in it. All the photos of these tractors sure look pure white to me. I checked the information out on other postings on YTMAG.com and it agrees. Another quote from there:
Hope this helps

"THE CORRECT COLOR OF WHITE FOR YOUR 340 WOULD BE THE 901 WHITE.
THE 935 WHITE WAS NOT INTRODUCED UNTIL 1970 WHEN THEY BROUGHT OUT THE 1456, AND 826. ALL TRACTORS BEFORE THIS USED THE 901 WHITE. 902 WHITE WAS USED ON EQUIPMENT DURING THIS SAME PERIOD OF TIME. THE 901 WHITE WILL HAVE JUST A TINT OF GREEEN CAST TO IT AND THE 935 WILL BE A BIT ON THE CREAMY SIDE. "

I found these paint codes:
IH-901 = PPG-8665
IH-902 = PPG-90592
IH-935 = PPG-91607
I have only used the PPG-8665 which is the correct match for IH-901.
Hope this helps

You have stumbled onto the same thing that most all of us have run across. In pictures, brochures, and even on actual pieces of equipment that still have the original paint, the white looks much whiter than what you end up with after you paint with 901 or even 935 white.
You have to remember something. Paint has come a very long way in the past 50 years. One of the biggest improvements is longevity of color. White, having almost no pigment in it, was very, VERY succeptable to fadeing. So, almost all of your references have faded white paint.
The other thing to remember. Old farm equipment, in almost every case, sat outside for most of it's life. Sun and the elements are just about the worst conditions that you can expose paint to. Again, white paint is extremely easy to fade.
Here is the bottom line. If you followed the paint chart, which you did, you have got the right color paint, in accordance with the "correct police". If you don't like it, because it is too creamy, repaint it. Remember, you are the only person whose opinion really matters.
Either way, you will have a nice machine to play with.

So once all the white fades out, and all you have left is the green, are you left with a John Deere?

Ned
I strongly recommend you print out the document found at this address and keep it with your 350U at all times. It is a photocopy of the original IH Paint Committee Color Decisions for the 340 Series tractors in 1958(couldn't find the same for the 350). This may be then produced and displayed if questioned by said "Correctness Police".

Canamscott,
The color of choice would be high-reflectivity chrome, or to wrap the tractor in tinfoil to throw off BigDog's Cub Locator Beacon!

Looks terrific! Really nice deep finish - is it a 2k urethane? I really like the creamy tint of the 901 white next to the Farmall red - if it were pure white it would be really stark color contrast and wouldn't look anything near as good. Please post photos of the entire tractor when you get the chance - I'd like to see it. I think the intermediate number series' (230, 350, etc) between the Letter Farmalls and the newer styled 140/240/340 etc series are great looking tractors - I like the contrasting trim colors yet retaining the more traditional sheet metal styling. Great work!
