Prayer Requested

Postby Phillip W. Lenke » Thu Apr 13, 2006 5:02 am

Folks
Please be praying for my MOM today and during her recovery. She is 72 She has had both hips and knees replaced over the last ten years, or so. However yesterday she fell getting into her car. She layed there calling out for over an hour. her cell phone was in the car and could not get to it. Our Neighbor heard her screaming but did'nt want to butt in.(her Words)I guess they have alot of screaming at their house and think it normal? (Brought me to tears, the thought of her laying there in pain. and cound'nt help her) Finally my brother got home from work and heard her screaming , got the ambulance called.. She broke her femur(thigh bone) just above her knee replacements. She is having surgery today ,not sure, but what they told my wife (RN) they are going to try to put a pin from the knee replacement past the broken part. She is overwieght , so they are not sure how the bones will hold up. She has very brittle bones just between the break and the knee replacement. Pray for her physical condition and for the family as this will be a family effort to take good care of her. I don't want her going to a nursing home for the rest of her life. Daily care is what she will require. We need guidance. I will let you know how things pan out.

Phil,
So sorry to hear about your Mom. Paula and I will be praying for her surgery today and for you and your family as you tend to her needs in the future.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Phil,

Marilyn and I are sorry to hear this bad news about your mother. We empathize with her on several levels. This is in stark contrast to the recent good times with the wedding of your daughter. Your whole family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Phil,

From the latest medical research, there are pro's and con's to being moderately overweight in regards to bone breakage in the elderly. Of course, being severely overweight is another matter. While the weight, of course, adds additional stress to the bones, moderately overweight people, on the other hand, show a greater capacity to heal than their lighter counterparts.

The Femur is a large bone, with plenty of living tissue, that normally heals relatively easily, even in the elderly. So there is some reason for optimism.

There are also large amounts of fatty marrow in the femur, however, and in the elderly, a breakage there usually results in some temporary mental confusion which appears in the days following the injury.

I am horrified to hear that there may have been a neighbour who was listening and watching, but lacked the compassion to even go ask if there was something he or she could do.

Best wishes, and prayers, of course, for her quick recovery, and no complications.

--Tom
