Charging or Not Charging that is the question

Postby The Riot » Thu Apr 12, 2018 7:30 am

Hello Everyone,
On "Big Red" a 1963, 6 volt positive ground Cub, when I pull the ignition switch the ammeter needle move to negative and when I start her up the needle never moves to the positive, charging side. I had the gen checked at a local generator shop a while back and when I reinstalled it was showing good on the ammeter, but now it's doing this.
I'm hoping it's the ammeter that's bad, how do I go about determining if the gen is working properly and if my ammeter is good or bad?

Thank you all,
The Riot

Your voltage regulator may need a little cleaning between the contact points.

Connect a volt meter across the battery, first not running then engine running at about half throttle. If the reading increases, when running, it's at least charging some. It's probably not the meter. If it's not charging, check the regulator contacts as mentioned above. I'm sure someone will guide you to the flow chart for testing the system.

And clean up the grounds, particularly for the regulator.
