New ignition coil

After 4 years of tinkering I decided to take the Cub out of the garage.

It behaved well, apart from alarming, to me, but possibly normal, mechanical noises, reported previously here - time will tell - until it cut out after maybe ten minutes running, the cut out occurred all 5 times we were out. I also thought it felt to be running "lumpy".

My adventures were on roads and included quite a steep hill so I thought it was maybe fuel running to the back of the tank. As a check I set it to run on level ground in the garage, doors open of course, but again it cut out with fuel in the tank. I looked over the Cub and found the coil to be too hot to touch.

Yesterday I fitted a new coil, the Cub fired up immediately, and with the throttle adjusted per the handbook, not as required before with it set at higher speed.

The lumpiness has gone and the coil runs cool.

Thanks, for the update and the advice/info. With the help and knowledge of a member here, I, and I mean, we, have been working through electrical stuff on a '50 Cub I bought from the aforementioned member's neighbor. But, it's mainly related to the generator/regulator/ampmeter/battery cables, etc., area, and not the ignition system, though there was the spliced wire on the condensor and the external coil thingy.

And although the battery is good, I just tried a hand start using the safe procedure demonstrated in a video elsewhere on this forum by Jim Becker.

Immediate start.

Congrats on your progress. Hand crank easy starting is a good indicator that the engine is properly tuned and in time.

I think I know how you meant it but I think confirmation, instead of indicator, would be a better choice of words. I would strongly recommend KNOWING that the engine is properly tuned, and in time, BEFORE attempting to hand crank anything. Hand cranking an unknown engine is rolling the dice on an ambulance ride in my opinion.

It's also easier to hand crank when it's just recently been shut off. Cranking one after sitting overnight or several days is a little harder.

Regardless, it's always exciting to know that it started by your knowledge and muscle.

AGREED!!

I make an occasional exception, but generally I won't hand crank an engine unless I personally set the timing.

Maybe a poor choice of words. Meaning is different in other parts of the country. Colloquialism. I personally don't have a problem with either one. JMO
