hello all, Iv been reading and learning a lot throughout this site. Lots of great info here. My son (9 months old) was given a 48 cub by a good friend of ours. Needless to set it’s his first cub haha. I hope to make it a project for me and him as he grows. The tractor was restored many years ago and then left under a rainy wood roof. The tractor overall seems sound and in good condition. Tires are dry rotted to the point of complete failure and the engine is froze up. I’ve removed the plugs and been soaking in KROL oil for the last week. Still not moving. From what I can tell it’s #3 cylinder that acts different than others. I can actually fill it to top with krol . Anyways. Once she’s free she will be moved into the shop and hopefully be many years of enjoyment for the both of us ahead.

Welcome to the forum. You should post pictures of your Tractor AND your son.
It might help free the engine if you also remove the valve cover and spray Kroil on the valves.

Welcome to the FORUM. Could be #3 is on the compression stroke with both valves closed. That would allow the cylinder to hold the KROIL without leaking down through the valves. You'll probably at minimum have to remove the head so now's a good time to start soaking down all the fasteners. You can also remove the starter and use a prybar to try to move the crankshaft a bit. Patience is your greatest asset right now. It can be freed up but there's no substitute for the patience. There's a lot of information and tips to be learned there.

As Stan mentioned, now that you have more than 2 posts, you can access all the manuals on the server. As a new owner of a Cub, we'd suggest downloading the Owner's Manual first and taking some time to read it. Many questions you may have will be answered there. Then, as far as working on your Cub, there are Service Manuals and other information that will be helpful.

We'd also encourage you to read:

• "Welcome Wagon"
• "How to Upload Pictures..."
• "Forum Rules..."
• "How To Forum"

Use the "Search" box in the upper right of the screen. It will locate answers to many of your questions.

I'd also suggest putting the tractor in 3rd gear and gently rocking it back and forth. Just a little every day or time you're out there re-filling the Kroil in the engine. When it comes time to remove the head bolts, don't be like me and muscle them off--I ended up breaking some off, which isn't fun. Many on here have used an impact wrench with success.

heres a picture of the cub. Took a few pictures but took a while to figure out how to compress them enough for an attachment . I'll get some more on later. Still been keeping it sprayed down. I removed the valve cover and sprayed it all down as well and replaced the cover.

If you have not removed the hood/fuel tank yet, you probably need to soak all the fasteners with penetrant oil. The lower dogleg screws are very small and easily broken so that means drilling and tapping. Front hood bolts are 5/16 and are located behind the upper side of the doglegs. They screw into the radiator supports.

You might want to Visit Cubarama in Fredericktown Missouri in September. Many of us will be there and you can pick some brains for restore help or ideas. It is about four and a half hours from you. Many of us stay at traditions Inn in Farmington. My wife and I plan to camp this year.

Actually live in Illinois. Probably a 30 min walk to the border though haha. Well today I decided to dig a little deeper to see if my snake oil plan would ever work to hear it fire before it got pulled into shop. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Let me know what you think.

As far as trip to Cubarama, we will have to wait and see. He's not a big fan of road trips.

Unless you are a good machinist I would suggest sending the engine to an automotive machine shop. It will need valves ground or replaced, seats honed or the block cut out to install seats (originals are part of block). Cylinder honed or bored, and rings, or new pistons. Crank and rod bearings replaced, and probably crank turned. all of that needs done if you want it to run right and not have to tear it down again right away.

Before I did all of that I would take a look in transmission for rusty gears on the bottom shaft, etc.

John is right on target. If you want to disassemble the engine before visiting the machine shop the next difficult chore is going to be getting the valves and pistons moving/out. Suggest you download the GSS engine rebuild service manual and learn how things are put together (if you don't already know). It's difficult to remove the pistons on an engine in this condition without removing the crankshaft because they are likely stuck pretty bad, but it can be done. Patience and lots of it is your best friend on one like this. Good Luck and keep posting.
