Aftermarket Starter/ Generator for 154

Postby Duner » Sat Sep 15, 2018 8:44 am

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket S/G? I see them for sale from $110.00 and up.

If you still have the original S/G, rebuild it yourself. Probably in the neighborhood of $20- in auto parts store parts.

If you don't want to or feel confident, it should cost you around $100- to have a professional shop rebuild the S/G.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I think I need a charge field coil for my 154 S/G. I have a spare S/G from something that did work till the DE bearing failed with out making any noise that I could hear and it started to smoke. I switched my good armature into the spare and it did not start or charge so I assume I need at least one or both field coils in it too and possibly and armature. The spare has a bushing in CE . I prefer a ball bearing like the 154 S/G has.
That is why I am curious if anybody has used the aftermarket replacement S/G.

IMO, if you don't have the tools and/or knowledge to test the SG to determine what is wrong with it, it's time to get a professional repair shop to diagnose the problems and determine the cost to repair or replace. Otherwise you are just swapping parts and hope it works.

The aftermarket ones work fine (I have one) but you need to make a bracket (or buy the bracket from hamiltonbobs).

toehead, thank you for the reply, The belt tension bracket won't be a problem.
I like to have a spare to use while I repair original.

My original has a bad field coil, and I couldn't' get the pole shoe off for the life of me. I've still got it and maybe someday will fix it.

Take a look at this home made tool for getting screw out.

You might need a pole spreader to get it together. Some don't use a spreader and claim they can spread the
poles enough with out the tool. Good luck!

I tried to rig something similar in my H-frame press , but didn't have any luck. I bet if I made one that would do the trick though.

In any case, it's a huge PITA to get off a single screw :)
