Taking another load of trash to the dump today I found these in the scrap metal pile, they jumped into the truck and came home with me. They both say USMC. The rough one says ICC 5L Bennett 20-5-51 on the bottom, I think.
Both are a little rusty inside, will need some cleaning before I can put them back into service.
I never know what I'm going to find at the dump. As long as I come home with less than I take Wife doesn't complain. Too much.

I could never drive a garbage truck for a living. At every stop I'd be saying, "they're throwing that away?" Or, "I can fix that"....
I'd need to pull a trailer behind me to bring all my treasures home with me.... :big crazy:

Visited the home of a distant cousin. Her husband worked for a time picking up garbage on a military post. He had two trailer houses filled with lawn chairs, 3 sided shed, and a work shop full of other stuff.

He said they picked up bottles with a deposit and stored them in the rear of the garbage truck for the shift.

Actually, I have picked up my share of useful stuff from dumps.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I have a friend who works for CDOT and it amazes me that people allow so much stuff, good usable stuff, to fall off their trucks/trailers.

This dump is a constant source of amusement as well as nice finds. I had to make 2 trips Sunday, the first trip netted me these Jerry cans plus two more standard metal gas cans. When I took another load of trash to the dump a couple of hours later I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the stuff I took on the first trip was already gone. I guess the old saying is really true.

I'm finally getting around to de-rusting the insides of these jerry cans, after which I plan to use them for kerosene. After de-rusting do I need to Caswell the inside or will the kerosene keep them from rusting again?

we live along a road that leads to a very popular boat landing . i have about 12 very new - new life jackets , one very nice fishing rod/reel , and several nice paddles . i quit stopping lately . coppersmythe..................seems like the kerosene would inhibit rust .
