T-Mo. I feel terrible about my reply. I didn't pay attention to who I was addressing and how it read. You know more about these than I do. Your intuition, born of experience, doesn't require a primer from me. Perhaps this will be of use to someone else who avoids a big mistake.

No concerns here. Even though I worked on a few of these GTs, I still run across something I haven't seen before. And I'm still learning from, no only my experiences, but my mistakes also. Or at least, I hope I have learn from my mistakes. :surrender:

Thanks T-Mo. I feel confident to address that muffler. This may be the first thing someone pulls off that engine because it is full of rust.

I must confide about an engine about which, I didn't want to take the head off. I used a small tube from the vacuum cleaner to vacuum all inside, closely around the rings, vacuum pulled out by a tube through the spark plug hole. I knew there was more under the head and it was late etc. So I sucked directly on the spark plug hole. I had forgotten that it was exhaust stroke and the valve was open. There was more to vac after that! But consider if the intake valve had been open with old sparky vac !! Stuff to never forget.

Update. Set the gap on the points, replaced the coil, clean the carburetor and replaced the float, plus new gaskets, cleaned the breather, and now it starts. Will have to buy a new battery for it, fix the grille support so the hood does not hit the steering wheel when opening and closing, and I will change the fluid on the transmission.

Congratulations on getting it running!

Bent grill support is somewhat common, guess they act as bumpers over the years. Bending back isn't an easy job, most common fix I see is to shim with washers. Loosen front 2 bolts, remove the back 2, slide a washer between grill and frame then tighten all bolts. One washer on each side usually does the trick

Good luck,
David
