Need Help Reading 1950 Serial Tag

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Fri Oct 12, 2018 7:56 am

Picked up a stuck 1950 Cub tractor the other day and I’m having a hard time accurately making out the serial number. From what I can see the serial number looks like 118236 or either 118286. As most all of these type tags around 1950, it is difficult to make out. I did check the database to see if either number is on there and it’s not. I thought I would let you guys and gals out your eyes on it.

Agree 118236.

Here is a hint for reading serial numbers and similar that are stamped in or protrude from the surface. Have the whole item in subdued lighting then illuminate it from the sides/top/bottom so the digits cast a bit of shadow. Lighting from one side may show part of a digit and another side could make another part readable.

Go out around dusk with a flashlight and give it a try. The numbers may jump out at you.

Definitely 118236.
The 8 is definitely an 8. It’s incomplete, but there’s nothing else it could be.
The 3 is definitely different.
The top lobe of the 8 is thick on the left side but thin on the right.
The top lobe of the 3 is obscured on the left, but definitely thick on the right, so it does not match the 8. Therefore, must be a 3.
