48 SA Touch Control Strainer too short.

Postby 48Cub48SuperA » Sun Oct 28, 2018 9:07 pm

This is the second touch control strainer that came from Steiner. I talked to one of their techs and he measured it before sending. Longer than the first one but still clearly shorter than the original. The first one they sent was even shorter. I can see the flashlight in the hole. The first photo shows that the old strainer fit nice and snug. If I don't use the gasket on the new one then it just barely touches the hole and would still allow fluid past. It has the fitting for the temp gauge on the other end. I am thinking about cutting the end off the old one and using it as a filler by stuffing the new into the end. Anyone have other suggestions on filling the gap?

Oh....that isn't good. The originals were a "crush" fit too I believe. Looks like Steiner needs to adjust their design. To fix your issue? I'm not sure....could you install an oring on that end to seal it off?

Why are you replacing the original? Looks fine to me, unless there is some damage not shown in the photos. Clean it up and reinstall it.

I am replacing it with a strainer that has the connection for the temp gauge.

Is the tractor a '48? If so it never had a temp gauge and you really don't need it regardless of age.

Does caseIH still carry them?

You can always drill and tap the original one too.

It is a '48. I already purchased the gauge from Steiner. I wanted a gauge to get as much information from how the SA is running. I am also putting a tach on it.

Cool. FWIW the gauge will tell you basically nothing. As long as nothing's keeping the lift arms from completing their stroke, (usually caused by something hitting the bottom of the tractor) the system will never overheat, and you'd hear the pump whining before it even started to warm up. I've got a new one on the shelf for my '54 SA-1 when I get around to restoring it since they put them on the later tractors. I'd check with caseIH for the strainer. I >assume< they still carry it and it should be right.

They did carry it about 4 years ago last I checked. Of course, that could change any day.

Be sure to let Steiner's design people know because I've found that they (say) will strive to correct a design to make sure their part is top quality and works correctly. They seem to love feedback.

You would think that it wouldn't be that difficult to get it right the first time.

I just got off the phone with Steiner and that is the only filter they carry for that unit. I explained that it is too short and could provide pictures but they declined, again saying that was the only one they had. They said that they have not had any calls about them not fitting. I wonder if others have just installed them without checking that they fit to the end. If the bottom plate is on someone may not notice. I finally called our local Case dealer and he has one for $130 - part number 355844R91. The only problem with this is they don't know the dimensions so it may be too short also. The parts guy put in a request from the supplier for the dimensions. I want to make sure before dropping $130 on another short one.

Just drove to Steiner today and discussed the issue with the strainer. They are going to use my photos in their quality control meeting on Thursday.
