Hello,
Any concoctions you have had luck with to clean up 70 years of grease mixed with field soil baked on to the 48 Cub?

Steve

Welcome to the Forum. Try soaking to soften with a cleaner like Purple Power, Mean Green, etc and then pressure washer. Just be careful of the radiator, wiring harness, electrical components. Lots of it will probably need to have the bulk scraped off. JMHO

Yeah, try scraping with a putty knife before you soak it with anything. I suggest a big sheet of cardboard on the ground before you start. Then you can just pick it up and dump it into the trash.

That's exactly what I have done...cardboard, putty knive &/or wide bladed screwdriver to get the bulk off, then wire brushes of various sizes, and THEN a solvent/cleaner like Purple Power. And have some spare cardboard for the second round!! Have fun...and WELCOME!

Thanks everyone. Good progression the cub. Cleaned up well, oil change with pan gasket, carb main jet sprayed out and points filed with a new set of plugs. 70 year old machine runs as well if not better than any of the other tractors!

Yeah, I wish my 2 year old Simplicity ZTR would start half as easily as my 71 year old cub.

Missed your first post back in November, so I'll welcome you now!

Take some time and read through a few threads to acquaint yourself with the Forum:

Don't know if you have all the manuals to your Cub, but now that you have 2 posts, you can access all the free PDF downloads in the Manuals section. They are located via "Quick Links" in the upper left corner of your screen. Hit that and a pull-down appears where you'll find "PDF Manuals". Through that link, you'll be able to download an Owner's Manual (very strongly recommended) and any service manuals that interest you. You'll be able to familiarize yourself with your new-to-you Cub more quickly. Implement Manuals are also available.

Might also enjoy reading through this thread: What to do with a Cub you just brought home

Take some pictures of your '48 Cub and post them. We’d like to see it. Agreed, when they're running, they sound pretty sweet.

Glad you joined us.
