184 will not shut off

Got a LoBoy 184 and installed Pertronix ignition. Engine starts and runs fine but will not shut off when ignition switch is turned to "off".
This tractor did not have the resistor on the back of the alternator when I got it, so I installed the correct resistor.
Is it possible that I have the resistor connected backwards? Does it matter which side of it is connected to the alternator and which side is connected to the coil?

I'm not up on the 184 ignition and charging system. It does sound though like you connected the alternator to the coil via a resistor which will cause the tractor to run as long as the alternator is producing enough output.

If your coil requires a resistor it should be between the coil and ignition switch.

Resistors aren't directional.

Missing some information. Which alternator is on the tractor? Where and how is the resistor wired?

Remove the resistor and see if the tractor shuts off.

Something wired wrong (duh). The resistor on the back of the alternator has nothing to do with the ignition system. It is there to excite the alternator. How did you wire the module? How did you wire the resistor?

There is a common alternator wiring mistake permitting the engine to run on after the key is turned off. The resistor and wire leading to the B terminal on the alternator are wired to the wrong side of the ignition switch.

Wired to the wrong side of the ignition switch permits the alternator to back feed the ignition system.

Currently no feed back from Seahaul, to perhaps determine what went wrong.

Is it possible the resister you are talking about is a diode, small black cylinder with white or silver band on one end? If so, yes polarity does make a difference.

Thanks to all for the questions and suggestions; I apologize for the delay in giving more info.
As Eugene suggested, I removed the resistor and the connection between the alternator and coil and that fixed my problem!
Now the engine shuts off when the key switch is turned to "off" and the alternator is charging the battery (getting 14 volts at the battery terminals while engine is running).
I found out that the alternator is not an original one that requires an external resistor and a connection to the coil to excite it.
