Super A Transmission, What have I gotten myself into?

Postby Dave1952 » Sun Jan 13, 2019 4:47 am

I recently purchased a 53 Super A. It runs and moves. Needs TLC. BUT I took off the transmission shifter cover after hearing a strange noise in transmission. Must have something flying around in there. Anyway the oil slinger gear is missing at least one tooth. My question is...Can a mere mortal take on this project? Can the oil slinger gear be replaced without without tearing the transmission out. Oh and the trans drain plug will not budge.
Help.......

Dave,
Of course a mere mortal can do anything.
I had to change the oil slinger on my 130.
Tranny does need to be pulled.
I have a spare you can have, if it is the same part. Some will say you don't need it, but if it has broken teeth it needs to come out.

I agree with EZ. Fix it, I’d be wondering why and how it got broke.

The oil slinger is made of pot metal.
I had bought the 130 in the fall, it had not moved for a few years and had lived outside.
The following spring I started it but it would not move, I gave it a few tries when it finally started to move, but there was a big 'pop' just before it started moving. Shortly after removing the tranny cover in the warm shop is when I realized that water had gotten in the tranny, froze solid and that is how I broke the slinger.
Boss Hog had sent me a replacement, but the tooth count was wrong, he sent me another one, and told me to keep the first one.
I kid you not, just yesterday, I saw that gear still hanging on the wall, I told my wife, somebody may need that someday.
Check your tooth count, if I have what you need, all it will cost you is the shipping.
It will be a big job, tractor split, cherry picker, and might as well change the seals bearings etc....

This is when it was back together.

Advice.....Take lots of photos during stripdown to make record of how it will go back together.
If you order your seals and bearings, have them on hand, you should be able able to do it in a couple days.

EZ....Let me tell you a little story..This tractor was inherited by the seller. The tractor was sitting for at least 2 years. I was one of the first to respond to the posting. I hopped in my truck to go look at it because I've wanted to get an SA for the front and rear hydraulics. I arrived and this nice gentleman was working on it. The tractor would not start. So the gas had to be drained, carb cleaned, and a new battery. After a couple hours got it running, but would not move. removed the rats nest out of torque tube and sprayed the clutch area with penetrating oil. still would not move. I was getting discouraged and left him unsure if I would purchase the tractor. Went to the local shop where I get my tractors worked on to see the progress on my Cub's front tranny seal. It was done and he asked me if I was interested in selling the Cub. He may have someone interested. Ended up selling the 1950 Cub w/ cultivators and homemade snowplow. This motivated me to buy the tractor. I returned to purchase to buy the tractor, gentleman informed me that after pull starting it and replacement of a shifter fork it moves and runs in all gears. SOLD. Anyway this is how the oil slinger gear may have gotten broken. Selling point for me was the remote hydraulics and the price. So I am a (Don't know the adjective I want to use) owner of this poor tractor.

Sorry Shane, that response should have been addressed to you. This is gonna be a long process for me. So from time to I will inform you my progress. Good thing I still have my Grandfather's Cub. I have already replaced the generator (Was missing). Tires, parts for starter rebuild, tune-up kit with wires and plugs, new manifold/pipe/muffler all purchased and on hand. But have to start with the tranny, so I don't mess up any more teeth in there.

I have never had much dealings with Super A, but wasn't the oil slinger discontinued in later models?

Other way around, it was added during A production and kept through the 140.

Just checked.
My gear is likely not going to fit.
Part # is for 100 Series.
Your part number should be 354643-R11 for the SA. It pays to confirm tooth count before completing order.

If you need any additional parts that forum members can't help you out with, https://www.vintagetractors.com/ihcabctrans.html may have what you need. I bought some good used gears from them when I was rebuilding the transmission in my 1946 Farmall B (which has identical trans, minus the slinger gear) last year.
