Felt Oil Seal for Magneto to Governor??

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Mon Mar 23, 2020 1:29 pm

I have never seen this before so I wanted to post it and see what you guys say. I removed the governor cover to replace a broken lever and removed the magneto to have it rebuilt. Upon inspection and cleaning of the motor I discovered this piece of thick Felt on the magneto side of the governor housing. It looks like it is made to fit there and looks factory; even though I’ve never seen this. It is oil-soaked. Please help me shed some light here.....

I have never seen a felt seal there, but there is a normal seal there, the service manual gives a specific depth for installing it. There is no shoulder to seat it against,
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Is there a normal lip seal on that side or is it on the other side (governor side) ? I thought it was on the other side.

I’ve ordered The regular lip seal that goes In there. Wanted to ask again about the felt disc I found in there. Is it something IH meant to go in there or aftermarket? Or is it just a “farmer fix” ?

Hi,
The oil seal goes in 1 place, and the flat surface on the governor gear runs on it.
Below are pics.
The 3rd pic, from TM Tractor, shows the governor gear, on the right side of the pic. The surface should be smooth and flat, smooth it with fine sandpaper if needed.
If there is a groove worn in it, try to position the new seal so it runs on a flat part of the surface.

Here is seal info, if you need it.
Be sure to install the seal so the seal lip faces ahead. Oil the seal rubber and gear surface before putting the gear in the seal.
Don't hammer directly on a new oil seal to install it.
Watch closely and be sure the seal rubber doesn't turn backwards when putting the gear in.

The Cub service manual, GSS-1411, has info about installing the seal, in the engine section.

Below is a post about making a tool to install the seal. :)

Thank you all for this information. I have gathered info from other recent posts as well about this. I am going to get Shane Nelson to make me a quick and dirty installation tool that seats the seal at the correct depth per the manual. One question though.....if it is a round tool I don't see why you couldn't make the opposite side work to seat the seal at a different alternate depth say if the governor body had a bad grove where the original location rides. What would be a good alternate depth if needed??

Hi,
I'm not sure there's a way to know the measurement for changing the seal position in the hole to a different depth, for if the gear surface is worn in one place.
Some modern oil seals are thinner than the old seals were. The spec in the service manual may not be right with a new seal.
You may have to figure it out, using a new seal. :)

if you have the new type thinner seal you have to seat the seal 1/8'' deeper

Is this the thinner style seal than the OEM one? I just picked this one up from Napa.

That one is .250" thick and it's the wrong seal the I.D. and O.D. are smaller, a Timken 450313 is .500" thick which is more than likely closer to original and also 2.062" I.D. X 3.251" O.D.

Glad you noticed that because I ordered a 450313 seal and this is what they ordered. another trip to the parts store now. I could have just ordered online and gotten it as quick
