If you bore the thickness of the seal there is just a very thin shelf left at the bottom. May as well go the extra few thou and open up the bottom. That way you have some leeway in locating the seal to avoid the groove in the shaft.

Bob, Thanks.

I am going to try to get three machined at once. The machinist at work likes clear instructions. So 0.688 to the bottom

If that is what SKF (.688) recommends. I would have to look it up on their web site.

When I opened up the pump from the 1949 I found this
49.gif
off of the 1949
This was not a leather seal and did leak into the pan and was dirty around the seal

When I opened up the pump from the 1957 I found this
oring.gif
1957
the o ring. No evidence of leaking

When I opened up the pump from ebay the it looked like the 1949
oldstly.gif
was dirty around the seal may have been leaking in the donar cub

Both the 1949 and ebay had the same warner gear 05-87 seal which crosses to SKF 5068. I found this interesting. It may have been a service bulletin or the warner was the only seal that fit replacing the leather seal

The machinest at work did not like the idea of opening up the oil seal style to be like the leather seal style. So I will end up with 2 different seals in 3 different clubs.

both new

I cannot find those SKF oil seals (4909 or 5068 ) anywhere ! I have tried NAPA, Case/IH, and Pep Boys and no one can find them. Is there another seal from another brand that would work ?

If you google it, you'll come up with multiple choices.
