Here's one for the computer geeks. My buried ethernet cable to the tractor shed and son's recording studio is bad. Apparently the conduit was damaged by contractor that installed water lines to Mom's trailer a few years ago, because I cannot pull the cable out. due to a sidewalk digging it up at present is not practical. Ky laptop has good service form my house router till I go in the door of the metal shed. Does anyone have an idea for a reasonable solution to get service back inside my shed?

John, how far is it from the router to the shed? If by resonable you mean inexpensive thats a tough one. Wireless access points with any range at all will be $400 +.

forgot that part, it is about 35 yards. Laptop works great till you walk through the door into the shed.

I had the same issue. Could get wireless signall to my shop from the house, but once I walked in the shop---forget it. I ended up burying a cable to the shop and installing a wireless router. Same as you have. That may be your best bet to just replace the cable.

Got any idea where they laid the service to mom's trailer. If you have an idea where the original feed to the shop was placed you will have an idea of where to dig.
Failing that do you have a sub soiler fasten a J shaped pipe to that and use it for a cable plow.

Got a tone generator and tracer from your old telco days? Might try that on the wires and or the conduit if it is metal.

Yup, but there is an elevated sidewalk on posts over the entire area where they may have damaged it. Digging up and repairing would be my preference, but not practical so long as Mom's trailer is there.

John....Where is the house router located?
Can you get it in/near a window facing the shed?
It might boost the signal enough to get thru the shed walls.

There are also external clip-on "antennas" that you could plug into your laptop while in the shed.

What you need is a WIFI amp.... This is what I am considering to give me better reception at the shop. I have only limited reception in both the pole barn and the wood shop. I have remote antenna's but they do not work all that well. Tried the signal boosters.. not so good either....

Dig each side of the walk and drive a conduit between trenches. You can even use a small hose nozzle to tunnel. I have a real fine short one I have used to tunnel under walks. I have used a hydraulic jack to push a hole through too. I'll see if I can find a picture of the nozzle.

the shed is powered form my breaker panel in the basement and I considered one of those, but the reviews I read were not very good as to speed and dependability, plus when I tried a wireless intercom that used power lines between house and shed it would not work, so that moved to the bottom of my list.

I have been seriously looking at this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DMEYCY I have a 10 foot wide lean to on the shed so it would be out of the weather, and if it will not go through the metal building I might try replacing a small section of the metal siding with a piece of Plexiglas to give a path for the RF signal. As was mentioned, possibly mounting the antenna on the outside may work. If that doesn't work I will probably try a wireless bridge. It works off the wireless, but has Ethernet jacks on it so I could mount it on the outside and run cables inside the shed. Not my preferred idea, but it should work.
