Would you recommend a 147?

Going to look at a 147 tonight. Any suggestions as to what to look out for?

Just the norm. Make sure the hydro works smooth, the engine sounds good and the electric lift works. I'm restoring a 147 now and it's a nice tractor. If it has a deck make sure that there are no cracks in the spindles and they are free.

Yep, the 147 is a dandy cub cadet. It was the largest hp tractor built until the wide-frame cadets started in the early 1970s. As Cecil said, just check the normal things. Check to make sure that the engine mount bolts are tight, and the engine is bolted down correctly. The 12 and 14 hp engines can often work the bolts loose and woller out the holes in the frame and/or strip out the holes in the oil pan where the motor mount bolts thread into. There's no good way to fix this problem other than a new oil pan. I've seen this on the past couple of cadets I've worked on. One of them I could actually take the motor and move it around slightly, just enough that you could notice that it was moving. On a hydro tractor it's not too bad for anything other than the holes being messed up. One of the ones I was working on was a gear drive, and it srewed up the clutch pressure plate because the motor was cocked a little and wore down one side of the pressure plate.
