I know pieces of this have been asked, but my 6 volt positive to ground battery was charging fine while running. I painted the engine and protected the regulator and the starter connections. I put the battery in, ran around for a while and left the battery in for a week and it was dead. I charged it up, fired up and noticed it wasn't charging on the gauge.
Do I need to spark or polarize the generator for it to start charging again?

Check your grounds!!!!!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: 1957 cub not charging
Looking at the schematic, there are 3 terminals on the front of the regulator and I presume there is one on the back to the generator. When your troubleshooting guide says connect BAT and GEN...should it be the generator terminal on the back or the F-Field in the front? Thanks

Re: 1957 cub not charging
Presuming the G is the wire attached to the generator from the regulator? I thought the "jump" had to be from a hot battery lead to the regulator or generator "Field" connection. I also presume the field connection on the regulator is the far left terminal and connects to the generator. Thanks, Don

Re: 1957 cub not charging
Don't presume any regulator connections. They are not all the same and they are all labeled. Never jump a hot lead to a field terminal. It would be a potentially damaging dead short.

Re: 1957 cub not charging
My regulator isn't labeled...it is all crusty and rusty by the connecting posts. So I could jump from the battery to the Generator connection on the generator?

Re: 1957 cub not charging
Hi,
Usually a voltage regulator has letters that identify the connections, stamped into the metal between the screws that hold the wire connections on, and the bottom of the cover.
Clean them and you can see if there are letters there.
