Hey Fellers,
I will try to post a picture to go along with my question. Here goes.
I have heard you should set the timing a little late if you use the hand crank very much. It eliminates much if not all kickbacks. Nothing like a broke arm to ruin otherwise good tractor time. So here is a picture of the brand new points with the pully lined up with the TDC mark. You see the points have not yet fired as she just reaches TDC. Does this look right?
thanks
Stanley

Re: timing
Hi,
It looks like you have a Battery Ignition unit. The Cub service manual says set the timing with a timing light, using the marks and pointer at the front crankshaft pulley.
Set the point opening at .020", like the owner's manual says, with the right side point on the high place of the cam.
Below is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing the points, if you need it.
Apply motor oil to the felt in the end of the shaft, like the manual shows, the shaft has to turn freely a few degrees, it is part of the spark advance. It should turn back and forth slightly with the rotor in place.

Below is a page from the Cub service manual showing the timing marks. Normally mark number 1 in the pic is aligned with the pointer at slow idle speed, 500 RPM. Some Cubs have only mark number 1.
You could make the timing later if you want, but the engine will have less power.
They are talking about other things on the page, the pic has the info.

Re: timing
Thank you sir!. Set the timing and it starts fine now.
I had cleaned the carb last week and left the throttle rod off. It started to run away pretty quick!
