Alternator for 47 cub

My understanding is that early cubs pulley on fan is smaller diameter than later cubs. Does this make a difference when choosing a 12 volt alternator for upgrade to 12 volt system. Want to make sure it will work with what I assume would be lowered RPM from a smaller pulley.

The early cubs did have a different fan hub assembly. I have only converted 12-volt cubs to an alternator but I do not recall ever reading on the forum of anyone switching the hub on an early cub to do the conversion.

The ask a different question why are you planning the switch?

I converted our ‘47 to 12V and didn’t even think about the pulley size. Been working good for a couple years with no issues.

Needs new battery and 12 volts would be handy to be able to run sprayer or brighter lights

Do you plan to keep the magneto or convert (or change it) to a battery ignition?

I converted my 48s to 12v but I don't know if they are smaller like your 47 your talking about. If they are in have no issues. A 12v upgrade is definitely a plus. You will get a little criticism from.the purists but in today's times a 12v alternator and battery is about the same.price as getting just the generator fixed or finding a 6v battery in most places

I like my 6 volt systems. Just gives me something different to think about. If you have a reason to convert like running a sprayer, more lighting or anything increasing the electrical load for that matter that is a good plan in my opinion. A 6-volt cub with a generator and the standard lights on can just bearly keep up with the electrical load. ( BTW there are a number of 12 LED options at the 12-volt negative ground that fit into the teardrop lights. It will save you ~5-7 amps at 12 volts)

My issue is when people say they are converting "to make it easier to start". I have started my 6v cubs in 2nd gear to demonstrate you can start fine with 6 volts. I once by accident started a 6 volt in gear with the PTO engaged driving a Mott mower I have started my cub in winter ( Philidelphia, PA area) after 4-5 weeks of sitting.

A 12 v conversion does not help a carburetor that needs an overhaul or a cub in need of a tune-up.

Hi,
IH made the generator pulley size bigger in 1953, starting at Cub serial number 165153, Raymond Durban's database says.
On the Cubs I have seen, it makes the generator start charging at a slower speed to have the bigger pulley.
If your fan assembly has been replaced, then it could have either size pulley.

RedTom, On October 17, on the Vine, forum member Red-Bud posted an option using a smaller racing alternator that could be easily installed using the existing brackets with minimal alterations. At $39.00 for a new alternator it's reasonable prices too! Good luck, Tom.

On my two tractors the cub definitely needs to rev higher for the alternator to kick in compared to the 300. If you are converting might want to check into electronic ignition, did that also when I converted. The LED lights are awesome, highly recommend them, you'll find reasons to use it at night.
