I have a question RedTom.....did you have the first, small alternator tested before trading it in for the second new, bigger one? If you did and it was bad, why didn't you just return it for another one?

Shane - Other than checking grounding I didn't have the alternator checked or check into the return policy with the original vendor. I'm sure that they would have stood behind their product, but it was probably going to involve shipping and waiting. Although the original item did ship promptly.

The box store NAPA had said they would accept the small alternator for core exchange which was about half the price of what I had paid for the small alternator. So I didn't really have much invested in this item. The NAPA alternator is supposed to work for sure with the smaller generator pulley and the box stores are a short drive.

The small alternator was a great price, easy for me to fit with the original brackets and my limited configuration skills. It fit easily under the hood. Sounds like others are having no problems with the smaller alternator.

But I'm impatient and unfortunately due to work and other family priorities I don't have the time I'd like to spend with the tractor. I don't live on the property where I'm using the tractor to mow, move brush and tree limbs, so unfortunately I can only tinker with it on my days off the regular job.

I get the time crunch, life gets in the way of things. I just hate you didn't have it tested to see if it was the alternator or wiring/switch problems on your tractor. I hate to see you go through all the trouble of getting another alternator and having to have brackets made and it not work. Hopefully the new one will be a direct bolt on and charge for you after getting the bracket(s).

Well, I cleaned all grounding points with wire wheel on the Dewalt hand grinder and put the alternator back on the tractor....NOTHING!!!! So, I put the new alternator on I purchased a few days ago and....NOTHING. Chances of me getting two bad alternators from two different sources is ZERO. So, I guess I have not wired correctly. I am using the pdf one wire alternator diagram on this site. What am I overlooking?

If your wiring is correct my guess is that isn't a true one wire alternator and it needs a switched hot wire to excite it. I doubt you got 2 bad ones either. I bought a one wire alternator that looked like the other one I bought but the first one had to have a switched hot wire going to it.

On the little denso that I just put on the 65, I took the time to stop by Oreilly’s to have it checked (it had a rough ride to my house) and it checked fine. This was due to everybody’s problems encountered. We all know that you don’t want the hood off as little time as possible....

All I did to mount it was to drill the original generator bracket out to 3/8, and throw a 2 inch 3/8 bolt through the hole.

I did have to go up to a 4l230 belt in place of the 4l220 that was on the tractor.

For electrical, I started with the bat lead from the regulator attached to the charging post...no fire. Apparently on my tractor, the switch was fed from the L wire at the regulator. I hooked it up and she fired right up .

I do NOT show charge on the ammeter, but I have 14v at the battery terminals running, 12.5 not running. My ammeter has been goofy since I’ve had the tractor, so I’m not surprised it doesn’t read charge...

Glad it’s working well for you. I did use the wire that was attached to the B terminal on the regulator and as suggested I did have 12 volts at the terminal when connected to alternator. I had also checked grounding of the alternator which I also confirmed when I was taking the alernator off to use for the core exchange when I inadvertently touched the pliers to the alternator body cause I forgot to take off battery cables. Luckily only small spark and no explosion. My Ammeter sounds like yours but unfortunately I never saw more than 12.3 volts running at full throttle both checking at battery and at the terminal connection on the alternator. But glad it’s working well for you. Is the generator pulley on the fan hub smaller or the same size as the front pulley?

The generator drive pulley is larger than the fan pulley. Take solace that your trailblazing efforts helping ease the process for the rest of us.

I did notice that it didn’t have as stable voltage as what I’m used to. We’ll see if the battery stays up...

Update received the alternator brackets from Charlie's Repair mentioned above. I had contacted Charlie after seeing his site on the internet, he does alternator kits for different tractors and also splitting stands. I just wanted mounting brackets that I could use with the NAPA alternator recommended on this site. Over last weekend after exchanging text messages, pictures, measurements he fabricated measuring on the CUB he has and Delco alternator of same size the below brackets and when finished he offered a price for the brackets and also the appropriate alternator pulley. I felt price was reasonable and Charlie was great to work with. Below are the pictures of the actual stuff I received today. I haven't mounted yet on the tractor its raining and cold here in North Texas and I'm too big of a wiener to face what most of ya'll probably call shirt sleeve weather. The items are well made and fit well on the alternator and the alternator swings easily on the bracket. I'm confident that it will fit well under the hood, Charlie having said he was making to fit under his hood. Hopefully weather and other commitments will align to wear I finish this small project.

14 + volts when running 12 volt conversion complete. With the brackets and pulley from Charlie's Repair fit was easy and worked with original belt.

Previous owner had changed the wiring from 6 volt negative ground to 6 volt positive ground.

47 Cub with original smaller generator pulley on Fan Hub.
26R 12 volt battery from Walmart
Napa 12 volt coil with built in resistor IC 14 SB
Napa Alternator RAY 2134011SW - One wire - low excite speed
Alternator brackets and Alternator Pulley from Charlie's Repair

Appreciate the information and suggestions that everyone shared.

Thanks, Tom Red

I think someone posted that alternators are designed to work with negative ground (maybe Jim Becker?).
