Factory temp sensor?

I have a 1950 cub serial 119058 and I don't believe this was available for my year model. Did this come off a power unit? I'm going to use it and I ordered a new guage, just was curious where it came from?

Looks like someone added it. Probably brazed on, scrape some paint away and see if it's gold around it where it meets the pipe.

If you search that part number it comes up as the elbow with no fitting.

Will this location give me a proper temp reading? I'm not worried about this type of system overheating, I live in colorado and would like to know when its warmed up properly. Thanks for your help.

When it will take a load with the choke all the way in it is warmed enough.

May not be exactly accurate is what I been told alot for that location. But most vehicles have their sending units either at the exit from the engine or water jacket in the block. Either way what comes out of the engine is what the engine is. It won't be hotter than what the engine is running.

I used a temp gauge with the sending unit in that location. It always would read about 212 degrees when warmed up. Currently I have a power unit engine with a sending unit on the side of the block. This engine takes a while to warm up and it reads right in the middle of the green.

The upper elbow is an excellent location for a temp gauge, it will give good readings there. A temp gauge is nice, in cold weather. The Cub has no t-stat, so it will not warm to normal operating temp in cold weather. I always covered the grill to encourage warm up, a gauge would be nice for adjusting the grill cover.

Couldn't an infrared thermometer be used? I'd think the external temp of the pipe would be close to the internal temp (water temp).

Yeah your probably right. Give or take a couple degrees but don't want to carry a temp gun around. Just look at a gauge.

Farming hemp this year and using my cub for a lot of it. One row at a time. As much as I plan to use it, i like having the temp guage option. Thanks everyone for the respose.
