Body work
Hello everyone, hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving and Christmas. I have been working here and there on my old cub. Got the finals apart, all cleaned up and back together with new brake bands, seals, hardware. Have been buying lots of parts, gaskets, hardware. A previous owner of the tractor put a vertical Delco distributor on it. They cut a hole in the side of the hood to accommodate the cap and wires as well as the top of the hood to get at the regulator I believe. The top hole I think I can fix easy enough. The hole on the side goes through the “ridges”, so it will be harder to achieve an original look. Can anyone shed some light on this? What may be an appropriate way to fix this?

Re: Body work
I think your best bet is to place a "wanted" in the Vine forum and see if someone has a scrapped hood that they could cut a section out of for you to weld in. Raymond repaired one at DSCF several years ago that turned out great.

Re: Body work
Anything is possible with time, skill and patience... But as mentioned above... A lot easier to find a replacement hood or section.... But something I would try for the heck of it lol

Re: Body work
Since hoods are no longer "replacement" items (meaning you can't go to Steiner or any other parts house and get a new one) I would say that any effort to repair the hood you have is a great idea. Bob McCarty has the best suggestion in my opinion.
If you own 1 tractor you have a interest
If you own 2 tractors you have a hobby
If you own 3 tractors you have an addiction
Anything over that..well your incurable!

Re: Body work
I had the same problem with one I bought that someone had cut a bigger hole out for a alternator instead of buying a shorter belt. Went looking for a old hood with the ridges in it at the grave yard and was lucky enough to fine the whole hood for $50.00 but had to do a lot of sanding and clean out the gas tank. That was a lot cheaper I think than hiring someone to cut and weld a new piece in.

Re: Body work
I agree with drifting1. Most generally keeping a repair area as small as possible is best. I would attempt the repair by replacing the section that is missing. Another approach would be to cut the entire ridged area out and replace the whole section keeping most of the welding behind the farmall sticker that would be on the hood. Also a good time to repair the front hood support brackets if they’re broke loose from the hood. Hope this help
