Need to stock the little parts

uh, why don’t I buy and stock the little things like tuneup parts so that I have them when I need them?
The ‘52 finished Santa duty in the front and having done it well needed to be dried out and parked out of the weather. I put the battery in and it fired right up. After a minute it died like it was out of gas and refused to restart. I ended up towing it to the back. I figured the points were burnt and I was right. They were terrible but I noticed as I turned the motor with the hand crank the points didn’t lift. Huh. Ok, took’em off and filed them. The distributor cam was dry too, odd, so I greased it a little.
Putting it back together and turning the motor I couldn’t get it to produce a gap, it wouldn’t lift and it hit me the lip, the follower on the spring section of the points was gone. As the cam was dry it probably wore that lip off.
That probably accounts for its running rough before it was assigned to Santa duty.
I went through all my parts and I couldn’t believe I didn’t have another set of points.
Why? No good answer.

Been mulling this over and doing some past post reading. Pertronix 1442, the points in the Lo-Boy has had its issues and this one so maybe I’ll do the swap for one to see how it goes. Best pros I’ve found is $84. Maybe this is better than chasing points???

Guy I buy parts from has tune up kits for 100-110 buckw Comes with points, condenser, sediment bowl or bow parts your choice, dist. Cap, tank screen, IH carb rebuild kit, plug wire, plugs, steel fuel line and seems like something else. Really it's a good deal. I seldom need everything there but good for parts on the shelf. Good deal I feel like.

I have done that too and too excess like a pack rat. I’ve been trying to break away from all the clutter and clear out what I don’t need. I probably tossed the old ones which really surprised me because I was sure I had a set.
I did find things I forgot I had that’s how long I’ve been acquiring and storing things waiting to get my restorations done.
I’ve got to get moving on them.
I guess in parts on the shelf and what is parked in the shed I have at least two fully restored tractors.

Despite trying to not accumulate clutter (Man , I need a garage or barn to clutter) , I have found a trend of not needing saved junk until I toss it. Regardless of how long it is held in limbo/disarray.

I know Letting go of stuff “I might need” is good but finding out I could have really used it doesn’t help.
I’m seriously considering installing the pertronix igniter into one of my cubs, I’ll probably get it and hang onto it till one of them eats it’s points.

Of course, it's the last place you look. Why would you look any more, after you find it?

But I grew up so poor, I have a terrible time throwing anything out. And my garage shows it.

My 6v Pertronix is close to 10 years with no problems. I did install an Optima battery around the same time but it's still going strong, no corrosion/explosion. It's a yellow top 6v and I don't think they make them anymore.

My immeadiate plan for the new Cub is to replace the truck cables on the new Cub and pick up a 26R battery for it.
I’ve got new tuneup parts coming tomorrow (?) so I just put points back in for now.
At some point I will order the pertronix kit. Maybe for the lowboy? Maybe the A as they claim it can go in a magneto too.

Two years ago I turned a cluttered barn into a shop with the aide of a trash can and eBay.
I sold what I would have thought to be worthless parts I’ve been sitting on for 30 years (why?) and made about $1,400. I got space and parts I actually needed.

Nope sorry everything I’ve picked up so far except one IA was already converted to 12v.
I’m pretty comfortable with alternators and have zero with generators so they stay 12.
The IA is something I grabbed to pick certain parts ( foot throttle etc...) for the IA I’m keeping then I put it in running condition to resell for whatever I can get. I guess it’s then I’ll have to educate myself on 6v systems.

To find out for sure, all you need to do is buy another set or two. The speed at which you find the one you thought you had is inversely proportional to the number of replacements you buy.
