Cub sitting up..

The old family Farmall Cub has been sitting for several years..Would love to get it going again..Any step by step instructions I could follow?..I'm average at best at mechanicing..lol...Thanks for any help...Pete

Hello Pete, on Mr. Bill Hudson's advice. There's no better place to start than a Cubfest. Also, The Dixieland Old Engine and Antique Tractor Club Spring Show is April 12 & 13 at Columbia MS Water Park just down the road from you. It's a public event and you are invited to attend. Not much "wrenching" gets done but there's always a lot of knowledge there and folks who love to share Old Iron experience. Hope to see you there. The Club President is Robert Alman and lives in south Jackson MS. He might be able to meet up with you and talk tractors. PM me an email address and I will send you some information. I'm about 1 hour south of Meridian MS.

I recommend a cub fest so lots of experience right on hand. There are multiple things can be or need be done. Best advice I got is PRIME THE OIL PUMP if been sitting a long time.

Hi,
The guys on here usually say prime the oil pump, if the Cub has been sitting. It is easy to do.
The oil pump can lose it's prime sitting, and not suck the oil up from the oil pan when you start the engine. Then there is no oil pressure.

I would read the Cub owner's manual, it has info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. It tells what service Cubs need.
You didn't say what year Cub it is.
The ignition points, in the magneto, or Battery Ignition unit, whichever it has, might be corroded from sitting, then it won't run. They need to be filed flat and shiny, or new points put in, and the gap set right.
They could have been burned from use before also.
The Cub owner's manual has pics and info about the points for both ignitions.

The carburetor could have problems from sitting, if gas was left in the tank. Sometimes they get gum or goop from old gas, or when gas evaporates. You could try running it, and see if it works right, before taking it apart.
The gas strainer under the gas tank, and the screen above the bowl in it, should be clean.
The strainer is easier to get to if you move the Touch Control arms to the rear, or down position, before working on the strainer. You have to run the engine to move the arms.

Check the coolant level in the radiator, the owner's manual says fill it to just over the baffle that you see when looking in the radiator with a light. It is down some from the filler neck.
The coolant might need changing if it is old. The owner's manual shows how to change the coolant.

There are several oils to check or change, the engine, air cleaner oil in the oil cup, steering gear oil, transmission oil, and oil in the 2 final drives. The owner's manual shows how to check or change them.
If it has Touch Control, the owner's manual shows how to check or change the fluid in it.
