Plow On: Facing the snowstorm head on - First time plowing.

Postby Our Pass Thyme » Sun Jan 20, 2019 3:02 pm

Hey, Holy Cow, sleet and frozen ice pellets at 5 degrees F!

I got Ruth the '53 Cub to start at 4 degrees F, and the motor purred just like it does in the Summer!

I headed out into the storm and met a drift as high as the plow blade extension, and the cub pushed right through. I made it all the way 'down' to the end of my driveway pushing through 10 to 14 inches of snow and promptly got stuck on the ice covered surface underneath. Ugh! Should have put chains on...

So I ran back to the shop and pulled the chains off the wall that I had removed from the cub when I first brought it home in 2013. Today I added a new skill, to my list of skills, of installing chains. Lacking bungees or springs to keep tension on the chains to keep them snug, I used some 3/8 inch paracord and cinched the chain tight. Success!

With chains, that cub walked anywhere I wanted it to go and pushed the snow as far as I asked it to. What a little beast! I ended up having a lot of fun despite the 5 degree temp, sleet, frozen ice pellets, wind and blowing snow. -Tom :hattip:

Got mine up and running but she's sputtering a bit under load. Float might sticking or maybe a obstructed orifice. Duel rear wheel weights and chains. She gets it done.

Best advice is to plow with the wind when possible. In other words, throw the snow in the same direction wind is blowing when you can.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Down our way , same deal . About 10 " of snow , 5 degrees and freezing rain ! I couldn't believe it. I have weights and tired old chains on the Cub. I did snap a cross link but was able to make a temporary repair with shackles . Always impressed with cub . As mentioned the only real slippage was some ice under the snow in a few areas . I could really use some duo crosslink chains and maybe a bit more weight ....... Stay safe everyone ......

It’s amazing what these little cubs will do. My son missed his today as it’s in the shop for a touch control repair. So he had to use the green tractor.

He wants his cub back.

The rear weights made a difference last snow as there was no ice. This time lager of ice under the snow I need to get some chains. Still had fun though.

We got a little snow Saturday, not enough to plow, and with the wind it blew some off anyways. Got more last night. I would rather read about snow removal, look at the pictures of snow removal, and watch the videos of snow removal, than actually having to DO snow removal. A more southern state is looking better each winter day this season.

I'm sitting here 100 miles from the end of Florida. It's 52 out, which is still 50 degrees better than home. When it's that cold here you know it's cold up north. When we were raising our family I didn't understand why my parents spent 6 months here. I fully understand now, don't miss being cooped up in the house for weeks. If I get nostalgic for outside work that is completely worthless and time consuming I will go towel dry the drive.....

As a native Floridian, we were always bundled up in our winter jackets at 50*F, while all those crazy Yankees were running around in their white patent leather shoes, white slacks and lime green sports shirts!!!

We’re just getting into that balmy tropical weather!
50’s might warrant a light sweatshirt here but this morning my Jeeps dash read 9 degrees with wind ripping pretty well. I draw the line at that and will spend the better part of the day by the woodstove. ;)

Spent my weekend plowing sidewalks in the city of Rochester on a highly modified/ narrowed Farmall H. What an incredible machine, 4th gear, wide open and it walks through almost anything. Came home and at 0 degrees my 6 volt cub fired right up and plowed my driveway. I don't think any tractor made today will be doing severe duty in 65 years. These are true engineering genius made with high quality American virgin iron, not crushed up rusted out cars recycled into inferior syeel.
