1948 McCormick deering f cub
Hello everyone I’m excited to be here. Just got my first cub and seems like I’m not getting any fuel. I want to get a carburetor rebuild kit but what kind of carburetor do I have? It won’t let me include pictures.

Re: 1948 McCormick deering f cub
YOu have to make a couple posts before you can post a photo. Earlier Cubs originally had an IH carb, which had the fuel line connected in the center near the top. Many have been replaced with a Zenith carb, which has the fuel line connected with a 90 degree fitting at the left edge near the top. the throat of the Zenith is also a little bigger than the IH, so it will be a little wider than the manifold where it bolts on.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Yes I have an ih carb. Also I’m going to need a main tear seal and clutch. Any recommendations on where to get parts? Also hydraulics. Thank you.

Contact Tim (forum name tst)...he remachines the rear seal retainers with new seals. Do not try to simply put a new seal in your old retainer...it will leak!

If you are just getting started TM tractor - a sponsor- is the easiest to find what you are looking for. As Dale (female BTW) wrote message tst for the rear seal.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Is the tractor running? Apparently, the engine turns over? How long has the tractor been sitting or last running before you purchased it?
Absolutely, first thing, prime the oil pump. Directions on how to prime the oil pump, on this site.
If the engine cranks over, compression tests, next.
Get the tractor running before you make any major purchases for it.

Tractor runs. We split it today to check the clutch because when we pressed it in, it did nothing.

Super excited about it. I believe it to be all original came with a mold disc front plow and belly mower. Has an ih carb. Engine is stamped 252341 R1. Above that is 2/ 18 R. The serial number is 190xx. I’m so excited.

A new OEM retainer and seal will run you about $214.00 (prices from TM Tractor at the bottom of the page). Tst will sell you a machined used retainer and seal for about 1/4 that price. Your choice.

Hi,
Below is the 1949 Cub owner's manual. The experts on here recommend reading it. It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1. It has pics of how the Cubs originally looked.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... index.html
There is an engine serial number also, it is stamped into the block. It shows where it is in the owner's manual on page 2. You might need to clean the block and use a light to see it.
The 251341R1 is an IH part number for the engine block. The 2 18 R is a date code. The larger castings on Cubs originally have date codes. R in a date code is 1948.
R in a part number is not a date code.
The 2 18 R would be February 18, 1948.
Below is info from TM Tractor about date codes.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/id_004.htm
This page below shows where the codes are.
The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/castdate_loc.htm
The clutch might be good, and the fingers are too low for it to release. The finger height commonly needs adjusting. They have said many times on here they should be set to 1 1/4" high, measured from the top surface of them, to the surface below them.
Below is a pic showing where to measure. They are measured with the clutch assembled on the flywheel, not off, like in the pic below.
Some of the new foreign made pressure plates are poor quality, people have written on here before.
Some of the people on here like to use an original pressure plate again, if it is still good.
The throwout bearing might be worn down from use, and not work right. The graphite material sticks out of a new bearing 5/16". Good luck.
Below is a post I wrote on with info about clutch repair. I have 5 posts down the page.

Below is a post about the rear seal retainer. The new seals available nowadays fit too loose in the older retainers, evidently.
