Woods 59 Mower deck

Postby tarawa » Fri Apr 12, 2019 2:38 pm

I purchased a mower deck from member here and I am awaiting delivery. Can someone post some good pictures of a Woods 59 deck installed on a Cub? They say a picture is worth a thousand words!

It depends on which one you bought. There were several versions of the Woods 59 for the Cub: 59C-1, 59C-2, 59CF-1, 59CF-2, 59CL-1, 59CL-2, 59CL-3, 59CL-4, 59CLF-2, 59CLF-3, 59CLF-4.

Versions with F are for Fast Hitch equipped tractors. Versions with L are for LoBoy tractors.

There are manuals for most of these in the PDF manuals section of the site: Quick Links (upper left)->PDF Manuals->OEM Implement and Attachment Manuals and Brochures->Woods Mowers-> then choose your download. Also, a search for 'Woods 59' in the upper right corner should bring up old posts with lots of pictures. A google image search for 'Cub Woods 59' will also show you a bunch of photos. Messicks also has parts diagrams for all of these: https://messicks.com/vendor/woods/models?vc=wo&q=59C

The deck itself is pretty much the same for all of them. The difference comes from the mounting brackets needed to get that deck hanging from your Cub. Take a look at what Urbish has suggested and familiarize yourself with them, then you'll better be able to identify what yours is when it arrives. And then you have the possibility of "mix and match" mounting bracket sets and sets with homemade parts. Don't let all this scare you though it's not as complicated as it seems.

The pdf files here on site helped a bunch. Deck is on the tractor. It never pays to take a shortcut. I was so anxious to get it going I decided to leave the original pulley on the power take off. It is much larger than the Woods pulley, which really puts a strain on the old girl. It almost stalls the cub in 2nd gear. I will put the smaller pulley on later today or tomorrow and maybe the deck won’t sound like a jet engine trying to take off.

I'm curious when you are referring to bigger and smaller PTO pulleys, just what size are these? The Woods mowers are all in the 7" range give or take about an inch as far as I know. The only smaller pulley I can think of is the Cub sickle mower at 4" or 4-1/2" depending on age.

I will take pics of both of them. The Woods pulley is definitely smaller than the Cubs original pulley.I think the larger pulley is trying to spin the blades too fast.

It's possible that the pulley you got with the tractor is for a Mott flail mower which is an 8" pulley. You should be able to see numbers cast into the pulley. The one for the Mott is a labelled H2. This one is a little marred up, but you get the picture.

It sounds like you have the pulley for the woods 42 on the tractor....about 8” diameter???

When I had that one on the 63, it was just short of taking flight, but it wouldn’t cut grass...no power left over after making all that noise.

I bought a smaller one (browning BK62H 6” OD) off eBay for $20 and it’s about perfect...cuts good, but the airplane is gone. My original pulley had a section broken out and the new belt didnt like it...

My 65 has a 6.375 or 6.5 OD pulley and it does fine as well...

About 6" is the max that the cub can power, anything over that kills all the power. I went to a 5" on one years ago when I had to mow with one of the cubs, and that did way better than the 6"--- I never ran faster than low gear, so take that into consideration also.

Thanks for all the replies. My Cub originally had a 42” mower on it. It was powered by the 8” pulley. Now it has the smaller Woods pulley.
