I think I mentioned this before, but both TM TRACTORS (a forum sponsor) and Steiner Tractor now offer a Sediment Bowl that has the L-shaped shutoff handle.

I ordered one from Steiner (needed some other stuff only they had, sorry TM!) and though I haven't used it yet, it appears to be pretty good. The only real obvious difference between the 2 is the knurled knob on the bail for securing the bowl.

I do know a rather "heavy handed" person tightend that nut...wasn't sure I would get it unscrewed without a wrench! The gasket probably already now has a groove in it! I will disassemble it and compare it to an older, original IH one and let you know any differences I see.

Just wanted to bring these new options to your attention. If you have any experience with either new one, please let me know.

Those bail nuts do get very tight. I have put a dab of grease between the nut and the glass sediment bowl.that helps.

Let us know if it shuts off. The last new one I got from TM would not shut off fuel flow. TM is aware of the issue and had several returned. It's a manufacturing defect. He offered to replace it with a different type until they work out the problem. That was last Fall and I need to check in to see if they have good ones again to replace the bad one.

I know...it is SUCH a pain to do a "trial and error"...install bowl, add fuel, turn on, try to catch dripping gas, drain tank, remove bowl, adjust/tweak,... repeat!

My problem is my gasket leaked right out of the box. I only noticed after I filled my super m (17 gallons) just before winter. Lost about 5 gallons.

FWIW, just got one of the TM sediment bowl assemblies and it would not shut off fuel flow from the tank. Also, the nuts on the valve stem are not SAE. I called TM and he said to send it back. He also said that his source was Steiner and they were aware of the problem.

Dale, I made this from a cheap wrench and two roll pins, not the new wheel, but easier than trying to get up there with pliers:
Made to work on the "knobby" version of the nut.

I recently bought one through TM (it looks like the Steiner version) and have had no issues with it. It does shut off the fuel flow, but you have to make sure it's seated well. I had to use a bit more force than on my original to get it to seat.
So far so good.

I can't really remember how that one I posted about went, but since it is not in my trash can, I guess it was OK!!

But I recently purchased one from Jason DuFour (close to me and he charges only what the shipping really costs...mostly Steiner stuff). It looked good, but decided to test it with water first. First issue was it came with the white plastic all-in-one screen/gasket.

It leaked like a sieve! Not sure how that would ever seal. I called Jason, and he sent a regular brass screen with a cork gasket to replace the plastic screen. I installed those, and it still leaked, but I noticed that the bail was cockeyed, and realized that the nut on the bottom was not "square" to the divot circle in the bottom of the glass. Once I loosened it and straightened it up, it seemed to be good. Installed it on a cub (which I sold) with no problems.

The main thing I wanted to point out is that that bottom recess in the glass bowl was not very deep, and it was quite easy to not have the nut centered in there.

I am done with those things. A pain to install, awkward to reach and they don't last long. I use a decent in-line shut off.

It looks like it, but----is the fitting for the fuel line the correct size?

Yes, it was. In fact, as their ad says, they include one of the break-away fittings for the 5/16" fuel line:

I’ve had one on my 55 since spring. I used a new cork and brass screen instead of the plastic one. Also I had a good, old style bail and nut, so that’s what I used. ( yes, I fear the correct police. ). I didn’t notice the smaller divot in the glass bowl though. Has been working great.

Could be the divot is the same, but as I had tightened the nut it kept going cockeyed. I had to really hold the nut in place, so it would stay put!

Steiners is a piece of crap sorry to say even if it looks right, I have 5 in a row that do not shut off, 1st they told me I was doing something wrong and finally they said they may have problems, they reproduce a lot of products that are not available but much of the quality is beyond horrible
