Mowing w/Woods 59

Many times people lament the capabilities of the Woods 59 on a Cub. I'm an unabashed fan of a Cub Woods 59 combination. In the process of preparing this combination for someone else, I had the opportunity to test my work yesterday.

The mower is set up to cut at 3" and the blades are 3 3/8" in back, thus not cutting the grass twice. The blades have been sharpened. So here goes.

I had been mowing about 10 minutes when I stopped to take this pic.

All of that mowing was opening up the area to be mowed, full swath, mower down to 3" cutting height, first gear. Now going to the rear to see the results.

Another look at some of the deeper thicker stuff.

Once again a look at the resulting mowing results.

A couple of shots of the completed work.

95% of all the mowing was done at full swath with the mower riding on the caster wheels set to mow at 3".

I to am a fan of the woods/ cub combo. I run mine about the same. I can go up a quite steep hill in first and most of the time I mow in second and on the flats third with full width mowing.

I’m one that has had a woods 42 and a woods 59 on the same tractor..,if you don’t need to cut 12”+ thick fescue, the 59 is great, and I’m normal mowing, im not sure the 59 doesn’t pull easier....

Woods 59 is a finish mower. Its not meant to mow tall grass such as that. It is a right hand mower, so you keep the uncut grass to the right, that will help eliminate the wind row. I have used my cub with woods 59 using the casters set at 3" for many years, if I let it too tall, it will bunch up the clippings, so keeping uncut grass to the right,with the right side shield off when the grass is thicker in the spring time. When you are finished and have a large windrow in the center of the yard, I raise the mower with the touch control just a tad and that will scatter the windrow. I mow in 2nd gear, full throttle on a flat 5 acre lot.

in your pics the grass is sticking to the tires so if the grass is a bit wet, that doesn't help either

Just curious about the pictures, smartphone I take it. When you rotate the phone from it's normal "Portrait" phone position to the "Landscape" camera position do you rotate the top of the camera/phone clockwise or counterclockwise? I'm thinking most likely clockwise. Take two pictures, one clockwise and one counterclockwise from normal. Post both and be ready with your best Gomer Pyle impersonation as most smartphone cameras have a preferred way they like to be turned which is usually counterclockwise. (What program your posting them into can play on direction sometimes as well so it's not foolproof.)

As for the bogging down, occasionally, but not anywhere near what I anticipated. I wanted to work the Cub hard to see if I had missed anything in preparing the Cub for someone else. Mission accomplished.
