Just bought another, but the wheels don't turn!

So, I’m just looking for advice on a quick and easy solution because I just bought another machine… Well, I put a down payment on 1955 model, with some kind of Woods finish mower mounted to it. Here’s a picture:

I don’t normally do “quick and easy”, but the problem is that the rear wheels are locked up while the trans is in neutral and it’s gonna be a bear to get on or off the trailer like that. Especially with that mower on there.

Any ideas before we do this “the hard way”?

Pull the bolts holding the trans cover on. If the shifter ball is worn, the forks are worn, or someone else reassembled wrong, it's possible for it to be in two gears at once. Otherwise, I have dragged a locked up Cub onto a trailer with a come-along. In my case, it was winter and water in the trans had frozen, locking up the gears.

Hi,
I noticed a few things in your pic.

The Cub has a 1947 - 1954 hood and grille.
It looks like there is part of a steering gear housing sitting on the platform, with the serial number plate visible. The plate looks like a 1st style plate, used from 1947 - 1950.

The housing could have been replaced because of freezing and breaking, so the housing installed on it could have the 1955 serial number. It has some light colored paint.

The left steering arm on the front axle, held on with the setscrew, probably had troubles. It looks like there are 2 setscrews in it. They originally had 1 setscrew each. The right side has 1 setscrew, I think.
IH quit using the arms with the setscrews during 1951, at serial number 138484.

Turns out, the whole transmission is one big ball of rust. It got water in there from sitting outside for so long, and there wasn’t a drop of oil in it… Just a bunch of water. I worked on it for a while, but it really needs to be separated from the tractor and taken apart on the bench and cleaned properly and I’m not sure I am going to do that or not. I pretty much just wanted it for the mower underneath, so I may let this go to another owner who wants more of a project then I want to tackle Right now.

I would agree, if that transmission is so rusty it has locked up it is pretty much a lost cause.

Hi,
You could use a small garden shovel, they are about 1 foot long, and scoop the goop out of the bottom of the transmission case.
Since you have the rear cover off the transmission, I would use a garden hose, with nozzle, and then a pressure washer, to clean the trans.
Leave the drain plug out while washing the trans.

Then you can use air, and blow the water out of the case and bearings, to help dry it. Wear your safety glasses when using the water and air.
Leave it open in warm weather, if it's warm there, to dry. My opinion.

When you can see the parts without the goop, you may be able to soak whatever bearings are frozen with penetrating oil, and get them to turn again.
If the trans gears under the shifter are not rusted much, you might not need to take it apart, if it will turn again.

Atf does wonders too...but you may be money ahead with a donor tranny...old cadets can be good cores too...

Hose that puppy out, and see what you have...you might be surprised! If you haven't bought the tractor and mower, see if the seller will sell you just the mower. Or if the price is right, and you don't want another project, either sell the tractor or part it out.

I bought the whole thing, tractor and mower, for $500. I wanted the mower and a bunch of pieces off this machine. The engine was free so I figured the hard part was already done... Usually it is the motor that is the problem. I'll probably sell this one as a parts machine and get it on down the road to someone who has more time than me, I've already got a nice enough Cub to play with and now I've got a mower for it. But there's so much enthusiasm here about trying to bring this one back... Gah. Decisions! I'll probably list it for sale and see what happens. If it sticks around for too long, I might come around and see what I can do with it later on.

Unless you need the money right away, you might consider hanging on to it as a donor, since you are working on another cub. It seems that anytime I sell an extra part I have, the next week THAT is the part I need! Once your primary cub is done, then you can sell the donor cub.
