New cub question
I got another cub last week and I'm wondering if this is an original alternator. Serial number is 248059, I think it's a 1976. Does anyone know when they started putting alternators on? Everything sure looks original. Thanks for your opinions.

Re: New cub question
I thought the long stripe and alternator kicked in at 248125 (very late 1975). If so, 248059 would be one of the last before the change. However, your alternator installation looks like the factory style. Are you sure you read the serial number correctly?

Re: New cub question
As Tim said, the 75 came with an alternator very similar to yours. However, on my 77 with original alternator, the alternator is painted yellow, along with the rest of the engine area. Your ballast resistor is painted yellow, but the alternator is not. My guess is that your alternator is a replacement.

Re: New cub question
I think it is a factory alternator looking at the brackets etc but believe that alternator has been replaced in its life, remember it is 40 some years old, it also has a plastic alternator fan instead of the metal one tips it off

Re: New cub question
Hi,
The Cub parts manual shows that the Delco alternator was first used at serial number 248125.
It shows they used a generator up to then.
Someone could have put it on, but might be hard to say without being there to look at it.
The fan on the alt looks like ones used on some 1980's Chevrolets.

Re: New cub question
Thanks for the information. The serial number looks right, but it does look like original style, albeit probably replaced at sometime. I'm going to say close enough for me to call it original and I'm going to try to make the alternator functional. It has some fuel issues and an oil leak, but nothing too bad. I'll probably be back with more questions.
Thanks, Jeff
