Hi Guys,
So I replaced the rear seal a while back and I'm working on the rest of the engine, the tractor is apart. When I put the seal in It didn't have to be pressed in, at most i tapped it in with a rubber mallet with some permatex around it.
Since then I have read about them leaking and keep thinking about it, I don't want to get this together and have it leak.
Thoughts?
I'm thinking pull it off and send it out to be machined and a seal "pressed" in, I know someone here does that but I cannot find the link or thread.
Thanks,
Brian

What’s wrong with the orginal seal as a replacement?
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

You can't get a new seal with the correct OD anymore.

...unless you buy a new retainer for several hundred $$.

So the seal that came with the "engine gasket kit" did not have to be pressed in like it should be. It was snug and I added permatex.. But the thought of having to split the tractor after a total rebuild got to me. I'd rather have it done right
So it is now on it's way to NY

IH doesn’t sell the correct sized seal?

Yes and no. Yes they sell the “correct” seal, no it doesn’t fit. The rear seal retainer is a cast aluminum piece and it swells over time from the heat of the engine and eventually the seal doesn’t stay tight and starts leaking. A new replacement seal will not fix this. The retainer has to be machined a little bigger for a bigger seal so it will be a press fit.
The only other option is what Bob suggest, buy a new retainer for a stock size seal but the retainer is expensive. It’s cheaper to have tst machine it and provide the seal.
Lots of people try to put a sealer of some sort on the loose seal and eventually wind up splitting the tractor again to have it machined.
