As I recall, a piece of material (wood, steel, aluminum) of smaller diameter than the hole to press the spring and ball down while allowing the shifter rod to enter and restrain the ball. Slowly pull out the material while holding tension on shifter rod. If I'm out in left field, someone will be along, soon, with better advice.

I used a small punch to hold the ball down then slid the shaft in place if that makes sense.

I got them in, now all I have left to do is fill the transmission with oil

Hi,
Good that you have it repaired.
The 1955 Cub owner's manual says to use gear oil in the transmission, 80W-90 is the modern gear oil.

I don't know if you have changed it before, remove the oil level plug, and fill it until oil runs out the level plug hole, low on the left side of the trans. It is near the muffler with the underaxle exhaust.

Hy-Tran can be used if you would rather use it. :)
